ABOUT SAMU


The Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is a non-profit organization working independently from MacEwan University to support students. Our purpose is to enrich the student experience by focusing on their non-academic needs through an array of student-driven programs and services.


We are governed by elected student representatives who set the strategic vision on behalf of students. With support from over 50 full- and part-time staff, we keep our mandate student-focused to achieve the vision.

DESCRIPTION


The Griff is MacEwan University’s student publication. We publish local news, opinions,


and more to our website, socials, and in our monthly magazine.


 


The research editor is responsible for fact-checking all articles that will be published either online or in print. You will ensure that everything we publish is correct, responsible, and verifiable. As the research editor, you’re the authority on what is true and what is false. You will work closely with editors and contributors to ask questions, track down sources, and check sources of information.


 


This role requires may see quick turnaround times for things such as breaking news.


 


We work as a tight, creative team to make all sorts of cool ideas come to life. At the Griff, you’ll play a part in building the day-to-day conversations on campus, as well as the legacy of the university.


 


The Griff is a service to students. All editors are expected to assist our contributors, and


support the MacEwan community through their work.


 


RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Research and fact-checking

    • Read and review all articles to ensure accuracy and truth of all claims and facts

    • Review all names, dates, locations, etc.

    • Ensure proper context is provided to ensure clarity and accuracy of ideas

    • Find and provide reputable sources of information if needed



  • Editing

    • Edit and proofread your own work, as well as other’s

    • Improve all content by engaging with ideas and staying critical



  • Writing and reporting

    • Conduct interviews, report, and write articles, if needed

    • Research information



  • Magazine

    • Work with the graphics editor to create a print layout that works for the publication.

    • Assist in laying out stories and advertisements in the magazine in time for print deadlines each month



  • Design

    • Assist the graphics editor with artwork if needed

    • Work with the team to plan, research, and execute design projects



  • Organization

    • Assign and manage articles/projects, set deadlines, and enforce them



  • Mentorship

    • Guide our contributors to success by helping them find sources, angles, stories, and more

    • Guide our contributors to success by helping them find and verify sources, facts, spelling (of proper nouns), and context

    • Work with contributors to edit and modify written work to match our standards



  • Meetings

    • Attend weekly meetings



  • Ambassador

    • Represent the Griff by assisting in contributor recruitment

    • Assist in promoting the Griff



  • Other duties as assigned by the editor-in-chief

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



  • Preference will be given to current MacEwan Students registered in a minimum of one class during either Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 term.
     


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES



  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines

  • Experience with Google Docs and the Google suite of tools

  • Knowledge of Canadian Press style is an asset


Confident speaking with others


 


 WORKING CONSIDERATIONS



  • Sedentary with Light Physical Effort – Sitting, Standing, Walking, Kneeling, Lifting – up to 10 pounds, Manual Dexterity 



TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


Up to 30 hours/week July 2 - August 30, 2026 & Up to 25 hours/ week September 2026 - March 31, 2027, with office hours between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Will work around the student's schedule. Some evening and weekend work may be required for this position.
