About NorthStar
NorthStar Earth Information & Intelligence (EI²) uses multimodal Earth observation data (hyperspectral, thermal, SAR) as building blocks to create information services tailored to the needs and requirements of government and industry clients. NorthStar’s development portfolio includes image processing and information extraction algorithms for a variety of applications in forestry, agriculture, marine and coastal environments, and energy.
We are looking for a Master’s student for a research internship assessing whether Earth observation foundation models can improve our tree species classification in Quebec.
The internship
This is a 16-week, part-time paid research internship (about 20 hours per week) in Montreal. Expected start date: January 2028.
You will join the EI² team and work directly with our scientists and data scientists, who will support you throughout the project. Your project: compare foundation-model embeddings (Tessera, AlphaEarth) with our current tree species classification pipeline, using real forest inventory and satellite data. Your work will give the team a clear answer: do these models perform better, and how many labels do they need?
