The Students' Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is a non-profit organization working independently from MacEwan University to support students. Our purpose is to enrich the student experience by focusing on their non-academic needs through an array of student-driven programs and services.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Advocacy Centre Assistant is to support the Student Advocacy and Policy Support Specialist in the day-today operations of the Student Advocacy Centre. This role assists with student-facing interactions, case support tasks, research, record-keeping and internal coordination that supports MacEwan students as they navigate various processes.


The Advocacy Centre Assistant also contributes to awareness-building initiatives through participation in beginning-of-term tabling, in-class presentations, and special projects to promote students’ rights, responsibilities, and available supports.


 


SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES


 


Presentations and Student Engagement - (30%)



  • Assist with preparation and delivery of beginning-or-term initiatives and in-class presentations that increase student awareness of the Student Advocacy Centre and its support.

    • This includes, but is not limited to:

      • Supporting the planning, coordination, setup, and takedown of initiatives

      • Assisting with the development of presentation materials to bring student awareness to university, policy, and procedures.

      • Contributing to Spotlights and other proactive initiatives that provide students with timely and relevant information






Project Support, Research & Resource Development - (35%)



  • Support the development and maintenance of student-facing resources and projects that promote policy literacy, procedural awareness, and self-advocacy.

    • This included, but not limited to:

      • Conducting topic-based research to student rights, responsibilities, as they relate to MacEwan policies and procedures.

      • Assisting in review and updating of Advocacy Centre materials to ensure clarity, accuracy, and accessibility

      • Supporting the planning and organization of term-based initiatives aligned with strategic priorities






Individual Student Support (25%)



  • Provide guided support to students navigating general academic and procedural concerns under the direction of the Student Advocate and Policy Support Specialist.

  • Develop a foundational understanding of MacEwan’s policies and procedures to support accurate information sharing

    • This included, but not limited to:

      • Developing a foundational understanding of MacEwan’s policies and procedures

      • Assisting in monitoring updates to MacEwan’s policies, procedures, and processes

      • Supporting students in understanding available options or next steps

      • Case Management






Other – (10%)



  • Support broader SAMU initiatives as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


 



  • Preference will be given to current MacEwan Students registered in a minimum of one class during either Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 term.

  • Asset to be enrolled in a social science (ex. political science, psychology, sociology) or communications program


 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Sound judgment and ability to maintain boundaries

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of personal information

  • Experience learning new online programs

  • General knowledge of SAMU and MacEwan policies, procedures, services, and resources


 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Mental Health First Aid, conflict resolution training



WORKING CONSIDERATIONS


 



  • Primarily sedentary- sitting, standing, and walking.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, use a computer, and other office equipment in addition to occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds


 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT


 


Up to 20 hours/week with office hours between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Will work around the student's schedule. Some evening and weekend work may be required for this position.
