The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for a Tourism Assistant Student. This summer student opportunity will run from approximately May 11, 2026, to August 22, 2026.


Job description


The Tourism Assistant Student will assist tourism staff with a variety of regular duties. The role will assist with the distribution of promotional materials and visitor information, the gathering of information, photos and videos and the creation of social media posts along with the collection and analysis of tourism industry and visitor data and digital assessments. The role will also assist tourism operators with initiatives to increase their digital and virtual offerings and other industry equipping initiatives, curate and maintain marketing inventory and event listings. The Tourism Assistant – Student will be an ambassador for Chatham-Kent, supporting all tourism activities both in-person and virtually, helping to enhance visitor experiences and promoting Chatham-Kent as a tourist destination.


Essential responsibilities



  • Assist with maintenance of tourism sector operator database

  • Assist with engagement, social media posting and tracking systems

  • Assist with collecting photos and videos while in the community

  • Assist with collecting information from visitors and tourism operators

  • Organize existing promotional materials and distribute to key sites as required

  • Assist with increasing digital and virtual tourism offerings among stakeholders

  • Assist staff with the creation of social media posts

  • Assist with the collection and analysis of visitor data

  • Assist staff with telephone and in-person enquiries regarding local attractions and accommodations

  • Attend pop-up events across the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and act as an ambassador for tourism


Essential qualifications



  • To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2025/2026 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2026 fall term (normally starting in August or September) with some experience working in a tourism, hospitality, marketing, economic development or public facing industry.

  • Must be a full-time student enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution

  • Preference will be given to candidates with some knowledge/understanding of the local tourism industry in Chatham-Kent

  • Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in the tourism and hospitality industry

  • Be familiar with social media platforms including creating reels and videos

  • Be comfortable working in a public facing setting and approaching visitors, residents and tourism operators to conduct surveys and promote Chatham-Kent

  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • The ability to speak and write in French, an asset

  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software program)


Work environment/hours of work



  • This position works both indoors and outdoors

  • This position works various hours: weekday hours, afternoon hours, weekend hours, with occasional evening hours


Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements


Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G2 Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ licence suspension in the preceding three (3) years; because this position may be required to drive their own vehicle, a reliable vehicle is also required.


Essential physical and/or safety requirements



  • Sitting: constant sitting in a chair (will be required to work at computers for long periods of times; will also be required to drive to tourism sites and to meet with stakeholders)

  • Hands: constant fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing (will need to be able to type and use a mouse on a daily basis)

  • Climbing: infrequent ladders, stairs (may be required to use a ladder in the storage room or when assembling displays; may need to climb stairs to sites or in the office)


Benefits


This summer student position will receive an hourly wage of $18.03 to 18.54 plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
