Summer Aquatic Monitoring Field Assistant


Location: 11821 123 Street NW Edmonton, Alberta


Closing Date: April 3, 2026, or Until Suitable Candidate Found


Position Status: One (1) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)      


 


The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for one (1) full-time, temporary Summer Aquatic Monitoring Field Assistant. This a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026.  Reporting to the Environmental Monitoring Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with aquatic monitoring programs for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.



Key Responsibilities



  • Conduct aquatic monitoring, including fish sampling, water sampling, and sediment sampling.

  • Collect, organize, enter, and perform descriptive analysis of aquatic data.

  • Learn and apply field protocols; proactively identify tasks and contribute to efficient field operations.

  • Create communication products (e.g., StoryMaps, graphs, infographics, one-pagers) to share findings with funders and community members.

  • Support planning and implementation of community engagement activities and events.



  • Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.

  • Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government events & programs.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.


 


Skills & Competencies


 


We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about aquatic monitoring and has excellent analytical skills. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include:   



  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance daily tasks and long-term objectives.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette.

  • Curiosity and commitment to learning about ecosystems and environmental monitoring.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities in field and office settings.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Adobe; experience with ArcGIS and RStudio is an asset.



  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse audiences.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.

  • Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.

  • Political and cultural sensitivity.



  • Willingness to learn and engage respectfully in Métis culture and history related to the role.



  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.


Qualifications



  • Post-secondary education in Applied Sciences, Conservation, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Resource Management, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.

  • 1-2 years related experience is an asset. School or volunteering experience is valid.

  • Experience using ArcGIS and working with Indigenous communities are assets.


Other Requirements



  • Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.

  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.

  • Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license.
