Summer Communications and Citizen Engagement Assistant
Location: 11738 Kingsway Avenue NW Edmonton, Alberta

Position Status: Four (4) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for four (4) full-time, temporary Summer Communications and Citizen Engagement Assistants. These are summer term positions with an end date August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Communications Supervisor, the Summer Communications and Citizen Engagement Assistants will be responsible for supporting the Communications and Citizen Engagement Department through content creation, event support, and engagement with Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens. The successful candidates will have excellent communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.
Key Responsibilities
Gather Citizen stories that highlight culture, identity, community contributions and Otipemisiwak Métis Government program impact.
Assist in the preparation for Otipemisiwak Métis Government events, including content development, event support, and community engagement.
Create social media content (photos, videos, written highlights) to showcase Citizen voices.
Support administrative tasks, content tracking, and event logistics.
Assist in crafting and executing communication strategies, plans, and tactics.
Write, edit, and publish copy for multiple platforms including but not limited to, websites, social media, radio, video and various print products.
Work with other Otipemisiwak Métis Government departments to achieve communication objectives on their projects.
Assist with content creation, social media scheduling/monitoring, and updates to communications channels.
Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government Provincial events & programs.
Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
We are looking for motivated, confident individuals who are passionate about Indigenous issues, marketing, and communications practices. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include:
Strong technical skills and knowledge of digital media.
Intermediate skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
Experience in SEO, keyword research, and analytical tools (e.g. Google Analytics).
Familiarity with Survey Monkey, WordPress, and other content management systems.
Experience in Microsoft Suite applications and Google Workspace.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.
Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
Political and cultural sensitivity.
Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.
Qualifications
Obtained or pursuing post-secondary education in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.
1-2 years of experience in a communications role. School or volunteer experience is valid.
A website link or portfolio sample with application is required.
Other Requirements
Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.
Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.
Reliable transportation is required.
