Summer Energy and Sustainability Project Assistant


Location: 11821 123 Street NW Edmonton, Alberta  


Closing Date: April 3, 2026, or Until Suitable Candidate Found


Position Status: One (1) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)      


 


The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for one (1) full-time, temporary Summer Energy & Sustainability Project Assistant. This a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026.  Reporting to the Energy & Sustainability Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with energy and sustainability programs for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.



Key Responsibilities



  • Support Otipemisiwak Métis Government facility programs for waste and water reduction, and energy efficiency.

  • Assist with the implementation of staff sustainability engagements and campaigns.

  • Support ongoing efforts for energy monitoring at Otipemisiwak Métis Government facilities, including monitoring energy use and renewable/solar energy production.

  • Review, analyze and report on Otipemisiwak Métis Government sustainability projects, including energy assessments, energy efficiency retrofits, solar installations, and water use and waste reduction. 

  • Calculate and report equivalent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and emissions reduction for Otipemisiwak Métis Government facilities using pertinent GHG quantification protocols.

  • Compile technical information and generate reports to report back to leadership, affiliates, and Citizens.

  • Assist with data entry and analysis of monitoring data.

  • Assist with climate and environment initiatives, including grant applications and delivery of projects.

  • Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.

  • Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government events & programs.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.


 


Skills & Competencies


 


We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about energy monitoring and sustainability and has excellent analytical skills. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include:   



  • Strong interest in energy efficiency, energy management, renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions quantification, and/or water use and waste reduction.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette and strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.

  • Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.

  • Ability to produce professional reports, documents, and presentations.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications, Adobe, and using other computer software.

  • Political and cultural sensitivity.

  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.


 


Qualifications



  • Obtained or pursuing post-secondary education in Alternative Energy, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.

  • 1-2 years of related experience in an energy or sustainability role is an asset. School or volunteering experience is valid.

  • Experience with waste auditing, GHG quantification protocols and working with Indigenous communities are assets.



Other Requirements



  • Availability to work Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.

  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.

  • Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license.
