Position Status: One (1) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)      

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for one (1) full-time, temporary Summer Engagement and Policy Assistant. This a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026.  Reporting to the Engagement and Policy Manager, the Summer Engagement and Policy Assistant will be responsible for assisting with engagement and policy projects and initiatives. The successful candidate will have excellent technical and communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.

Key Responsibilities

• Support citizen engagement activities hosted by the Environment and Climate Change department.


• Produce relevant educational materials and resources related to environment and climate change, including website content and social media posts on topics relating to climate adaptation, food security, emergency preparedness, greenhouse gas mitigation and other subjects.


• Assist in compiling reports for the Environment and Climate Change department to showcase projects.


• Engage with Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens about environment and climate change priorities.


• Prepare policy briefs, briefing notes, and reports as required.


• Assist with the facilitation of programming relating to climate change adaptation, energy transition, biodiversity loss, or other priorities.


• Support land-based learning, knowledge transfer, and environmental monitoring programs and events.


• Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.


• Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government events & programs.


• Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about environment and climate change issues and Indigenous engagement. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include:   

• Strong interest in climate change adaptation, energy efficiency, energy management, renewable energy, and/or water use and waste reduction.


• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette and strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.


• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.


• Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.


• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.


• Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.


• Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.


• Ability to produce professional reports, documents, and presentations.


• Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications, Adobe, and using other computer software.


• Political and cultural sensitivity.


• Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.

Qualifications

• Obtained or pursuing post-secondary education in Climate Change, Indigenous Studies, Community Engagement, Sociology, Anthropology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.


• Experience in citizen engagement, outreach, and/or educational efforts that benefit the community is an asset.


• NVivo program training is an asset.


• IAP2 training is an asset.

Other Requirements

• Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.


• Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.


• Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.


• Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license.
