Job Description - Summer Intervenor

Our certified specialists provide training that empowers clients to develop or to restore activities of daily living skills, to promote their independence, to enhance safety and mobility. We work closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professionals, by providing essential care on a referral basis in homes, workplaces and communities across the country.

Position Title: Summer Intervenor

Location: St. John’s, Newfoundland

Term: Full-time, Contract (8 weeks)

Reports To: Provincial Manager, Healthcare Operations

Salary: $16.35/hour

Date: May 8, 2026

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role is to support children, youth, and their families in the Summer Intervention Program.

II. Program Summary

The Summer Intervention Program must meet four fundamental goals that are adapted for each child based on their individual strengths and needs:

  1. Prevention of Regression: Children who are experiencing vision loss and/or multiple disabilities may experience a regression of skills without a structured learning environment. Intervenors will provide opportunities for children to maintain knowledge and skills learned at home, in daycare, or in school.
  2. Obtaining New Skills: Intervenors will encourage the development of new skills through structured activities that are adapted to meet the child’s needs. The child’s parents/guardians, Early Intervention Specialist, Teachers, or Itinerant Teachers can help with planning or modifying activities.
  3. Encouraging Integration: Intervenors will help children with vision loss by encouraging integration and offering opportunities to participate in activities with other children in their community. Integration may also focus on reducing any socially inappropriate mannerisms or behaviours.
  4. Promote Independence: Intervenors will help children with vision loss to maintain or improve their independence and self-image.

III. Role Expectations

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

·       Actively participates in Summer Intervention Program training,

·       Supports children and their families in the Summer Intervention Program,

·       Engages with the child in meaningful and goal-focused activities,

·       Maintains detailed and accurate documentation,

·       Regular communication with the family, and the Early Intervention Specialist,

·       Maintains confidentiality of children, youth and their families and

·       Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times.

III. Qualifications

·       Experience working with children or youth with disabilities,

·       Demonstrates organizational and time management skills,

·       Sensitivity to the needs of children with vision loss,

·       Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing,

·       Ability to work flexible hours,

·       At least sixteen years of age,

·       Clear Criminal Record Screening Certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check (from RNC) or Criminal Records Check (from RCMP).
