The McMaster Students Union (MSU), is the largest group on campus representing approximately 24,000 undergraduate students of McMaster University. All students enrolled in 18 (or more) units are members of the MSU. The MSU serves students in two main areas; political representation and the enhancement of student life.
The MSU operates 25 different services and businesses to serve the needs of students. As well, the organization is the front line of student advocacy. The MSU advocates for student interests at the university, municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government.
The Welcome Week Accounting and Finance Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial transactions for the MSU Welcome Week Department. The MSU Welcome Week Department manages over 10 Faculties and assists them with their finances. Additionally, the Welcome Week Accounting and Finance Coordinator will work directly with the Director of Finance & Welcome Week Faculty Coordinator to reconcile expenses and revenue, enter sales summaries, track invoices and expense reimbursements and issue payments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong attention to detail is required to ensure accurate data entry and filing
Interpersonal skills required to effectively interact with individuals (students and staff)
Strong organizational skills are required, as multiple tasks and activities will be required to be completed simultaneously
Good working knowledge of accounting procedures/principles
Conflict mediation skills are an asset, may occasionally encounter upset students
Communication skills required to ensure seamless transition of tasks between multiple clerks
Effort & Responsibility
Responsible for prompt and courteous customer service
Responsible for maintaining accurate recording of payments received
Responsibility to follow all established MSU accounting policies and procedures
Judgment required to make financial decisions for the department
Organizational skills required, as coordination of activities requires the completion of many tasks simultaneously
Efforts to communicate with various groups that are partners in delivering Welcome Week
Working Conditions
Self-directed position: flexibility in determining some of own hours
Work is performed in a shared office space during typical business hours
Frequent interruptions
Hours are spent completing data entry and staring at a computer monitor which may cause strain if not monitored
Work will take place primarily in a controlled office environment, but also in a variety of event locations around campus as well as remotely
Training and Experience
Experience in a customer service environment is an asset
Clerical/Administrative experience an asset
Great Plains Accounting Software (training provided)
