Job Description - Advocacy & Engagement Coordinator (Part-Time, 8 Hours/week)

Contract (April-December 2026), Part-Time - 8 Hours/Week


2027 renewal dependent on funding



Food Banks Mississauga’s (FBM) vision is a Mississauga where everyone is food secure. We lead our agency network to realize a food-secure Mississauga by providing and promoting access to healthy and appropriate food.


Job Purpose


To create a food-secure Mississauga, FBM provides food to those who need it today and advocates to decrease the barriers that prevent food bank visitors from living poverty-free for tomorrow. The Advocacy & Engagement Coordinator will lead execution of the organization’s advocacy strategy, including agency involvement, client engagement initiatives, government relations, etc.


Key Responsibilities 



  • Develop and execute a range of approaches to activate FBM’s advocacy strategy and advance the organization's policy and advocacy goals. Previous approaches have included letter writing, promoting petitions, press briefings with research data, events with elected officials, thought leadership, voter education, and election debates.

  • Recruit (in partnership with the Agency Relations Specialist) and lead a team of agency representatives and volunteers to inform and implement these approaches and establish communications. 

  • Identify and monitor pending municipal, regional, provincial, and federal initiatives and other policy and advocacy issues falling under the scope of interest for FBM. Maintain flexibility to take action as needed.

  • Identify and develop/maintain relationships with key stakeholder individuals, organizations, and communities to determine potential partnerships for FBM’s advocacy work.

  • Collaborate across multiple teams to execute work → CEO on strategy, Agency Network team on integration with network activities, and Marketing team on communications and/or events.


Education and Experience



  • Required: A college certificate/diploma or university degree

  • Required: 3+ years of professional or volunteer experience in community organizing or government relations/advocacy. 

  • Knowledge of the Mississauga/Peel political landscape and government relations at all levels

  • Planning/Organization/Project Management. Exceptional project management skills to drive, prioritize, document, and evaluate projects. Manage responsibilities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting.

  • Leadership/Relationship Building. Strong internal/external relationship building. Works effectively with diverse stakeholders and can lead others, including conducting 'crucial conversations.' Ability to remain non-partisan.

  • Courage and Self-Confidence. Confident, professional, and acts with integrity; provides input, makes decisions, manages risk, and confronts issues. Embraces change and challenging assignments.

  • Communication. Exceptional, timely, clear, respectful written and verbal communication using appropriate and effective tools and techniques. Displays poise, confidence, and diplomacy with stakeholders.

  • Evidence-Based Decision Making/Data Analysis. Uses data to draw conclusions and assess situations for importance, urgency, and risk, making decisions in FBM's best interest.



  • Technical. Proficient in MS Office/Google Workspace. Prefers digital solutions in FBM's cloud-based, paperless environment.

Role Details


Relationships: This position reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications


Position Type: Part-time, 8 hours/week 


FBM hours: Mon/Tues/Thurs 9 am-5 pm, Wed 9 am-8 pm, Fri 9 am-1 pm. 


Role Location: Hybrid - attendance at in-person events/meetings will be required. Schedule to be determined with your manager. 


Compensation: $45 per hour
