POSITION OVERVIEW
The Board of Directors is the legal and fiscal authority for the Women's Centre of Calgary. It is responsible for fulfilling the Women's Centre mission and is accountable for its operations. The Board establishes a clear organizational mission within its charitable objectives; developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans to accomplish this mission; overseeing the Executive Director; ensuring the financial solvency of the organization; interpreting and representing the organization in the community. The Women's Centre board operates at a board governance, policy and strategic level. The decisions of the Board are generally informed by the various board committees and reports, as well as the Executive Director.
BOARD MEMBER DUTIES
• Attend quarterly board meetings, the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the annual board retreat, and other board development activities (e.g., orientation.).
• Actively participate in at least one sub-committee.
• Complete the necessary pre-reads and tasks in-between meetings.
• Build positive and collaborative working relationships with other board members, management, and those connected the Centre.
• Engage in timely communication with other board members and management.
• Represent the Women's Centre in the community and attend Women’s Centre community events.
• Stay informed about board matters and issues of particular concern to the Women’s Centre.
• Engage in ongoing activities to enhance and maintain knowledge about board governance, skills, and practices.
• Contribute to a culture pf philanthropy.
• Act as an ambassador for the organization; communicating with others about the importance of gender equity and supporting women and girls.
• Participate in activities related to equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as Truth and Reconciliation.
TIME COMMITMENT
• Four hours every three months plus additional time to complete pre-reading or committee work.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Empathetic mindset.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills: The ability to collaborate, share ideas, and give and receive feedback.
• Strategic thinking focused on the broader direction and future growth of the organization.
• Experience advocating on behalf of or working in service of women girls.
• Basic financial acumen.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Board meetings and related activities occur in-person; however, hybrid options are available if needed.
CONDITIONS
Criminal record and vulnerable sector check required.
