Job Description - Child & Family Counsellor/Sexual Assault Counsellor

Position Overview



Cameray Child and Family Services is seeking a part-time (24 hours/week) Child & Family Counsellor / Sexual Assault Counsellor (Outreach-Focused) to provide a blend of direct clinical support and community outreach services. This unique role involves working therapeutically with children and families, while also engaging the broader community to raise awareness and expand access to sexual violence services through education, partnership-building, and advocacy. 



Start Date: As Soon As Possible



Note: This is a temporary contract position until March 31, 2026.


 


Key Responsibilities



Child & Family Counselling:



  • Conduct client interviews, assessments, and develop individualized treatment plans.

  • Provide individual and/or group counselling using trauma-informed approaches.

  • Monitor and evaluate client progress toward treatment goals.

  • Act as an advocate and provide case management and resource referrals as needed.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records and documentation.

  • Participate in case conferences, team meetings, and cross-sector collaborations.

  • Provide outreach counselling services as required.

  • Ensure therapy environments (including play or art therapy spaces) are prepared and maintained.





Sexual Assault Counsellor (Outreach-Focused):



  • Build and sustain partnerships with schools, shelters, cultural groups, and service providers.

  • Conduct outreach to underserved and marginalized populations.



  • Plan and deliver educational workshops, trainings, and public presentations.

  • Represent the organization at community events, tables, and inter-agency meetings.

  • Engage in advocacy and public education on issues related to sexual violence.

  • Support community capacity-building and local response efforts through trauma-informed engagement.


 


Qualifications



  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children, youth, and/or families.

  • Experience in sexual assault counselling, community outreach, and anti-violence work is preferred.

  • Specialized training in play or art therapy is an asset.

  • Registration or eligibility for registration with BCACC, BCASW, BCATA, or related body is recommended.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation (for outreach and community events).


 


Skills and Competencies



  • Strong interpersonal, counselling, and communication skills, both verbal and written. 



  • Proficiency in relevant treatment modalities. 



  • Effective organizational, time management, and administrative skills. 



  • Knowledge of group dynamics and facilitation techniques. 



  • Ability to work collaboratively with program staff, therapists, social workers, and other professionals. 



  • Self-reflective approach and commitment to fostering inclusive, egalitarian, and collegial relationships 



Knowledge and Values



  • Understanding of the needs of abused and neglected children. 



  • Knowledge of child development and family systems. 



  • Experience working with resistant or hard-to-reach individuals and families. 



  • Commitment to empowering clients to identify and solve their own problems. 



  • Belief in the importance of a nurturing family environment for children. 



  • Confidence in clients’ ability to grow and change. 



  • Capacity to establish respectful, strengths-based relationships with clients. 



  • Ability to set and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. 



  • Cultural competence and awareness of the socio-economic diversity of the service population. 



  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive practices.

  • Understanding in working with diverse populations including Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, and newcomer communities.
