Community Navigator, Vancouver (Temporary, Part-Time)

If this sounds like you, we invite you to join our team as a Community Navigator (Overnight). In this role, you’ll serve as the first point of contact during overnight hours, offering a warm, welcoming presence at the front desk. You’ll provide support, guidance, and safety to community members who walk through our doors, while also managing reception duties such as monitoring building access, responding to inquiries, and handling emergency situations calmly and professionally. With a Christ-centred approach, you’ll walk alongside individuals with empathy, offering a steady presence and practical help in times of need.

This is a temporary part-time position with a regular schedule of Midnight - 8am: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and every other Sunday, and offers a starting hourly wage range of $26.26–$28.70.

You'll frequently engage with clients facing crisis situations stemming from various challenges. Support from fellow staff members will be readily available as needed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support community members who visit UGM’s Hastings facility, including referrals to internal and external services.


• Build strong relationships with community members to encourage new perceptions for change.


• Provide person-centred support to assist community members with their needs.


• Meet and inform community members of services offered at UGM and other agencies.


• Greet and assist visitors, volunteers, guests, tenants, suppliers, service providers and clients


• Sign visitors in and out, providing temporary security passes.


• Answer and direct incoming calls (multi-line switchboard).


• Arrange and accept courier deliveries.


• Provide administrative support services, including word processing, updating documents and binders, filing, preparing reports and other general office duties.


• Maintain a clean and well-organized lobby and reception area.


• Maintain security of the building, including monitoring the building security system and contacting appropriate individuals if there are any concerns.


• Manage keys, ensuring they are signed out and that the keys for vehicles are only given to authorized drivers of UGM vehicles who have a reservation on the Hub.


• Provide support for Navigation Services, Outreach, and Shelter as needed.


• Assist with the Men’s Shelter intake/discharge and perimeter security of the facility.


• Foster open communication with other departments.


• Participate in staff meetings, training and development opportunities.


• Provide support to staff and departments on an as-and-when-required basis.


• Assist in training and supporting new staff, volunteers and interns.


• Monitor age, sobriety, and gender of guests coming into the building where appropriate.


• Adhere to all UGM-published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Core Values, and Statement of Faith.


• Advanced computer skills (Excel, Word, and Outlook); 50 wpm typing speed.


• Experience using database applications is an asset.


• Minimum Grade 12 education.


• Other combinations of lived experience and education may be considered.


• Ability to set appropriate and safe boundaries with demanding individuals and deal with individuals in crisis and/or psychosis in an appropriate manner. 


• Professional presentation and demeanor with a friendly, approachable personality and strong customer service skills.


• Experience with Indigenous clients; working in a multi-ethnic and socially diverse community is an asset.


• Ability to multi-task, work well under pressure and function independently.


• Ability to support and manage clients in crisis situations.


• Strict attention to detail.


• Proven track record of punctuality.


• Proven track record of contributing to a healthy team environment.


• Complete the UGM Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Course.


• Technical Competency—Trauma-Informed Care (Level 1): Help identify negative events that have impacted the client’s functioning and develop interventions that emphasize safety, choice, and personal control.

Working Conditions:

• Work Location

Work is generally performed indoors within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.  

• Physical Requirements

Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 20% of the time. Employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 80% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 35lbs occasionally.

• Work Conditions

Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises. Occasional environmental exposures to cold, heat, and water. This position is required to work in an environment often dealing with clients in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.

• Hours of Work

This position works a regular schedule covering a 24-hour period of time. The shift patterns are:

Day:  8am – 4pm; Evening:  4pm - 12am; Overnight:  12am – 8 am. Some work on scheduled days off ay be required. Moderate overtime may be required. Working on statutory holidays may be required.

Job requires frequent interaction with the public some of whom may be upset, abusive, and/or violent. Job requires working frequently with people in unhealthy conditions and may include exposure to bodily fluids, lice and bedbugs. Employee is required to hear information about clients’ lives which may be troubling or upsetting, and may cause emotional issues including vicarious trauma.
