Job Description - Community Support Worker

Children and Family Support, Community Support Worker 



Job Summary:On both an individual and group basis, the Community Support Worker supports the quality of life for the children and youth we serve by ensuring that their physical, social, vocational, educational and medical needs are met.  The Community Support Worker participates as part of the team responsible for implementing all aspects of the participant’s program, including agency policies, procedures and philosophy.

  • Demonstrated ability to advocate, provide personalized support, and teach life skills and self-advocacy skills to participants and families

  • Knowledge of theory, values, and practices in community living including support systems

  • Ability to work effectively with families, staff, volunteers, and organizations

  • Ability to work alone and unsupervised, as well as part of a team

  • Ability to perform lifts and transfers of clients

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated good time and general management skills

  • Positive role model, including modeling a healthy lifestyle



Requirements of the job:



  • A Community Support Worker Certificate, or equivalent education and experience

  • Three months’ experience delivering similar services supporting individuals with disabilities in community settings

  • Valid First Aid, WHMIS and CPR certification

  • Current and satisfactory criminal record search 

  • Unrestricted Class IV driver license; own vehicle and driver's abstract, a physician’s health reference,

  • A negative TB test

  • Experience with Children and youth preferred

  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite, preferred



Additional information:



  • The successful applicant will begin employment at the CFS program: Monday - Thursday: 15:00 – 17:30 and Friday 15:00 – 19:00.The CFS program schedule flexes with the school calendar. It is also closed on stats and for two weeks during the school year.  The CFS staff work 30 hours/week for 9 weeks in July-August to cover summer programming and an additional 2 weeks to cover Spring Break.

  • This position is open to both male and female applicants and requires Union membership.



  • May be required to use a personal vehicle

  • Successful applicants will be required to obtain a Class 4 driver's license in order to pass the trial period
