Job Description - Education Support Worker

ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)



The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe.

POSITION


As part of the Education team, the Education Support Worker (ESW) assists K4-6 students in all the schools (First Nation, SD27 and Independent schools) to enhance the younger children’s experience to facilitate student success.  A liaison for cultural teachings, learning on the land, career planning, and literacy/numeracy.  This role will be working with other employees, parents, students, the community and the services in the school/community. Part time in the schools with casual on call for events, field trips and meetings as needed. Reporting to the Education Coordinator.



Employment Type


Permanent, part-time, 10 hours per week, Monday-Thursday 8:30am-11:00pm.


 


Probation Period


3 months from the date of hire.


 


Education Required



  • High School Diploma – GED.

  • Minimum of 1 year experience post-secondary training in Education, EA, EEC, CSW or FSW.

  • Ethnic Indigenous Studies or Indigenous Education considered an asset.


 


Experience Required



  • Minimum of 6 months of Youth and Family Worker experience or equivalent working with or providing support for Indigenous youth/parents/guardians and community.

  • Class 4 Unrestricted license.

  • Level one First Aid and Emergency Youth First Aid.

  • Food Safe.


 


Overtime Status


Non-exempt.



DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. School outreach daily and maintains contact with student(s), parent(s), teacher(s), and Principal(s), and Schools/ Institutes as required.

  2. Assist students to foster positive relationships with their teachers, families, and peers.

  3. Relays important information to the Education Coordinator regarding the student to and from the home and school. Frequent monitoring and tracking on MyEd and CIMS online platforms. (e.g. grades, attendance, additional support needs).

  4. Facilitate a learning climate that is open and non-threatening.

  5. Facilitate a learning climate to solve problems with critical thinking skills.

  6. Serve as a safe role model with a flexible mindset in all situations.

  7. One on one support adapting materials/plans for learning and follow up for progress with teachers, Principals and Educational Coordinator.

  8. Maintain student monthly progress reports for each student while using positive techniques to enhance experiences to motivate build confidence.

  9. Check in daily and meet one on one with Educational Coordinator as needed.

  10. Confidentiality must be respected by the ESW including information of the student and families involved.

  11. Collaborate respectful communication with Students/ Community, SD#27, FN School, and Independent Schools,

  12. Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.

  13. Contributes to the WLFN's ongoing success by following LEA and accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

  14. Will be intermittently required for SBT meetings, IEPs, home visits, career event planning, transportation as needed on field trips.


 


SKILLS AND ABILITIES



  • Ability to take directions and work independently.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions within the area, often on short notice.

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure.

  • Understand the Local Education Agreement framework for each school.

  • Excellent knowledge of primary grade curriculum and cultural best practice.

  • Exceptional familiarity with technology and remote desktop applications (MS Teams, Zoom, Outlook, etc.)
