Job Description - Registered Nurse, Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU)

Job Description

This is a temporary part-time assignment for approximately twelve () months.

As a Registered Nurse on the Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU), you’ll see a tangible impact of the care you provide as you support patients along their surgical trajectory. You’ll support patients with varying and unique care considerations, which allows for constant on the job learning opportunities.

The PACU features a unique schedule distinct from other care areas. This schedule facilitates the care of our surgical patients while also allowing staff variations in shift start times and diversity in shift hours.

Is this you?

You bring an in-depth understanding of anesthesia techniques, including general, neuraxial, and local anesthesia. You are seeking exposure to specialized procedures, which may include HIPEC, Sarcoma Excising, Peripheral Nerve Blocks, ECTs, TEEs, Cardioversions, Medication Infusions and Uterine Fibroid Embolization.

You are a great communicator with strong patient-education skills. The PACU sees patients from diverse backgrounds with individual care needs. Patient care needs are both pre- and post-operative, so your ability to adapt and effectively support them through various phases of recovery will be essential. 

You are eager to learn new and innovative practices. This is a recently redeveloped environment featuring new technology and equipment including device integration, electronic documentation, closed loop medication systems and surgical techniques utilizing robotics and GTX OR.


About the Post Anesthetic Care Unit
The PACU at Mount Sinai Hospital provides optimal care to a mix of elective pre-operative, day surgery and same day admission post-operative patients. We also provide care for medical day care patients and patients receiving specialty procedures that require anesthesia. The PACU also supports emergency surgery cases during the day, overnight and on weekends. Staff rotate through the areas of care which enables more diversity in one’s daily nursing assignments.

In this role you will:

  • Ensure patients are optimized for surgery pre-operatively
  • Assist during special procedures (such as ECT’s, TEE’s and Cardioversions)
  • Provide care and support to medical day care patients
  • Care for patients post-operatively, optimizing patients for either discharge home, or transfer to inpatient units
  • Address patient care needs pre/post-operatively, addressing post-operative outcomes/complications, keenly assessing and supporting patients through the phases of recovery
  • Provide patient and family-centred education
  • Work closely with surgery and anesthesia for the best patient outcomes
  • Job Requirements

    Job Requirements:

    Mandatory

  • Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved bachelor’s degree in nursing program, or equivalent combined education and experience
  • Critical Care Certification (candidates in the process of completing their Critical Certification may be considered)
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification or a commitment to obtain within six months of hire
  • 1-2 years recent experience in a PACU and/or Critical Care area (i.e. possessing experience with airway management and hemodynamic monitoring) 
  • 1-2 years recent experience in Venous Access1 - 2 years recent experience in acute pain management and use of IV/Epidural PCA

  • Preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN). Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered
