Since 1933, Haven Toronto has been a drop-in centre where elderly homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships, and become part of a community. Our vision is a safe and just community in which elder homeless men can live a quality and dignified life.

Summary: This role supports an overnight winter program hosted at Haven Toronto, a program of St. Michael’s Homes, in partnership with St. Michael’s Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital, and the East Toronto Health Partners. Individuals who present to local emergency departments but do not require immediate medical attention are redirected to Haven Toronto for a warm, supervised place to rest. The Support Care Worker helps maintain a welcoming environment, assists with basic needs, and monitors client wellbeing throughout the night.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site leadership and coordination during evening hours, including supporting team operations, ensuring smooth service delivery, and acting as the point of contact for urgent issues or incidents.

  • Conduct general assessments of Haven Toronto clients’ wellness, including physical and mental health, providing direct assistance where possible and making appropriate referrals to community resources when required.

  • Document observations and client needs in the logbook; consult with the Supervisor and/or colleagues as appropriate. Assist clients in scheduling and following up on appointments with professionals or community supports.

  • Build and maintain supportive relationships with clients, monitoring wellbeing and encouraging constructive engagement and participation in programs.

  • Assist clients in accessing core services such as showers, laundry, meals, clothing, and recreation areas.

  • Receive, record, and distribute client mail, cheques, phone messages, and supplies (e.g., clothing, towels, recreational equipment, food) as needed.

  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment for clients; monitor client interactions and intervene as necessary and appropriate.

  • Provide crisis intervention in accordance with Haven Toronto policies and procedures; document actions taken and recommendations for follow-up.

  • Administer first aid or call emergency services when required.

  • Assist in receiving and organizing food, dry goods, and donations; help maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.

  • Work collaboratively and constructively with colleagues and clients in support of Haven Toronto’s mission.

  • Ensure all areas of the premises are clean, safe, and free of obstruction or hazards.

  • Perform opening and closing procedures, including safety and security checks.

  • Stock supplies throughout the building as needed.

  • Always represent Haven Toronto in a professional and respectful manner.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Social Services, Addictions, Recreation, or Mental Health.

  • Demonstrated understanding of issues related to aging, homelessness, addictions, mental health, and food or income insecurity.

  • Proven ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Experience engaging older adults who are economically marginalized in creative and meaningful ways.

  • Knowledge of downtown Toronto community and social resources is an asset.

  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.

If you feel you would be a good fit for this role with Haven Toronto, please submit a single document with a cover letter and resume by email to Gabriel Aboutboul, Director of Clinical Programs.

Haven Toronto strives to foster a workplace that reflects the diversity of the community we serve and welcome applications from all qualified candidates; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
