Job Description - Royal Danish Defence College invites applications for Assistant Professor

The Centre for Joint Operations (CJO) at the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC) invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Military Operations.

Responsibilities:
The Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC) provides a dynamic and evolving academic environment for teaching and research. Students enrolled in the Master in Military Studies (MMS) are Danish military officers and civil servants at the intermediate level of professional military education (OF-2 to OF-3). The language of instruction is English or Danish (applicants who do not speak a Scandinavian language can expect to work in English).

About the Centre for Joint Operations:
Successful applicants will be joining the Centre for Joint Operations (CJO), a group of approximately 20 military analysts, civilian researchers (with backgrounds in Anthropology, Sociology, and War Studies). In addition to teaching on the MMS, CJO staff contribute to a wide range of Defence needs, including supporting NATO and Danish doctrine development, participating actively in public debates, and advising the Danish Defence on operations-related matters. All researchers at RDDC enjoy academic freedom within the CJO research framework and are expected to produce high-quality research in their field.

About the position:
Associate Professor is a permanent position. Assistant Professor is a temporary position up to four years with the possibility of qualifying to become an Associate Professor.

Primary instructor responsibilities include teaching and developing the existing Basic Military Operations course, as well as helping to develop new courses to support an operations-focused Master of Military Studies. The Basic Military Operations course’s main focus are three blocks of approximately week-long presence modules per semester, in which the successful applicant can expect to team up with military instructors. The successful applicant will develop lectures, act as a syndicate (seminar) leader, and assist in grading assignments.

Candidates will be expected to: engage in professional research and writing in areas of relevant expertise; actively seek publication of book manuscripts as well as scholarly works such as articles, monographs, and book reviews for publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, professional journals, and other outlets; and present results of research at appropriate conferences and symposia.

Service responsibilities include: curriculum development for CJO; occasional committee assignments to fill institute needs; and service as a subject matter expert for the Royal Danish Defence College.

The ideal applicant:
A terminal degree (PhD or equivalent, JD, etc) is required in Anthropology, History, International Relations, Sociology, Political Science, Policy Studies , War Studies, or a closely related field.
Candidates specializing in military operations and the operational level of war are desired. Note: Prior expertise in the operational level of war is not necessary, but applicants should have a keen interest in directing their research to this exciting field. We encourage and support an ambition to further developing military operations as a field of research.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants for assistant professor and associate professor positions must have a PhD degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
    • Applicants for associate professor must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research (peer-reviewed scholarship), and service.
    • Applicants for assistant professor must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, research (conference presentations or works-in-progress), and service.The RDDC will advise foreign applicants (if hired) in moving to Denmark and setting up their household here. This includes assisting in getting a work and residential permit, advice in finding temporary accommodation, as well as offering advice on how best to move to Denmark, with a family if relevant.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Research expertise in one or more of the following:
o Contemporary military operations;
o Military, particularly NATO, doctrine;
o Joint / coalition / Alliance military organizations, particularly Joint Headquarters;
o Joint Functions;
o Operational Concepts;
o Planning, particularly NATO’s Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive;
o Operational assessment;
o Logistics and related fields;
o Joint Targeting and related fields;
o Other related topics at the operational level of war.
o Experience in Professional Military Education.
o Ability to engage in policy and public debates.
o International research network.
o Passionate about researching military operations and educating officers at the operational level of war.

Terms of Employment, Salary, and Contact Information
Salary (before tax, exclusive 17.1% pension):
Assistant Professor: Approximately 41,500 DKK per month
Associate Professor: Approximately 45,500 DKK per month
