Design Engineer, Failure Analysis Laboratory

Your role and responsibilities

  • Are you interested in electronics and failure analysis? Do you have a desire to solve problems and puzzles. Do you like to understand what might have gone wrong and caused products to fail prematurely. Did you watch “Air Crash Investigations” and think, “could I do that”? We might have an interesting job offering for you. In this role you will be doing and coordinating root cause analysis of variable speed drives from single Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) components to system level cases at ABB, System Drives unit, Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland. This position offers great opportunities for your personal and career development based on your interest. You get to strengthen your knowledge of failure analysis, physics of failure as well as electronics design. In addition to this you get to improve your coordinating skills while solving complex technical analysis cases.

  • Owner of larger more complex analysis cases
  • Performing root cause analysis with the goal to propose product improvements
  • Analysis and experimentation to reproduce product behavior
  • Defining and building test setups for failure analysis
  • Supporting field and factory failure analysis wherever more focus is needed
  • Investigating field returns beyond warranty to learn how products age
  • Documenting and writing technical reports for both internal and external use

Qualifications for the role

  • 2 years of experience in the field of electronics, working with designing, measuring, analyzing, or repairing printed circuit boards is essential
  • Sound knowledge of electronic components and electronic circuits as well as measurements techniques and analyzing test results is a must
  • Knowledge of PADS, Labview, electronics simulation SW, VHDL or basic SW design is counted in your favor
  • You have an instinct of solving problems and have a good ability to connect the dots even when there is limited amount of information available. You are outspoken and curious to learn more and have the ability to network to gain more knowledge about the problem at hand
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in the field of electronics or similar
  • Fluent written and spoken English. Finnish language is considered a great benefit
