Data Scientist — Ad Recommendations

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our team to build and improve custom ad recommendation algorithms for Sanoma Media’s digital products. We work close to the business in a B2B unit serving advertisers, so the goal is twofold: increase reader engagement and deliver results for our business customers.

You will work day-to-day in a business-facing team with another Data Scientist and experienced Data Engineers to make ads more relevant across our products. Ship to production, see results quickly, and keep things practical. Your HR home is our experienced Data Science competence team—so you get a close‑knit squad for delivery and a wider community for support and growth.

This is a mid-level role: you’ll own well-defined models and analyses; senior colleagues set broader technical direction and are there for sparring and mentoring.

What you’ll do

• Build and run ranking models for display, video, and native ads.
• Turn business questions into analyses and ML solutions—explain trends, outliers, and performance.
• Do the simple stuff well: sanity checks and ad‑hoc deep dives—not every task needs a model.
• Design A/B tests, analyze results, and iterate. Own offline evaluation, online validation, and monitoring.
• Ship to production with pipelines, CI/CD, and sensible data and model governance. Integrate cleanly with teammates and existing technologies.
• Collaborate with data engineers, domain experts and sales to deliver measurable impact.
• Spot new data opportunities and take them from idea to production.

What you’ll bring

• Python and SQL you trust in production.
• Experience with recommendations/ranking or similar predictive models for high‑traffic products.
• A/B testing and practical statistics.
• Code versioning and CI/CD habits.
• Spark/PySpark or similar distributed processing.
• Clear communication in English. Finnish is a plus.
• Relevant degree or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Ad tech & marketing science (targeting, attribution, incrementality, uplift).
• B2B/media domain knowledge (inventory, yield, platforms).
• Databricks and/or AWS, MLflow, Docker; privacy‑aware ML.
