Job Description - HR Intern, Leadership and Working Culture

Are you interested in tasks related to diversity and multilingualism at the City of Helsinki? Are you a future talent enthusiastic about developing competences and operating models? If you answered yes, you should have a look at this job advertisement. We are looking for an international intern for a three-month period in the autumn of 2024 in the Human Resources Department of the City of Helsinki.

As Helsinki becomes more and more international, a growing proportion of the City’s employees are immigrants whose first language is other than Finnish or Swedish. At present, roughly 10% of the City of Helsinki’s staff speak a language other than Finnish or Swedish, and the proportion of foreign-language speakers is constantly growing. We want to be an inclusive and welcoming workplace where every employee is equally valued. We are developing this by increasing multilingual practices and creating a variety of ways to provide guidance and orientation when we do not share a common language.

To support diverse and multicultural work communities, the City of Helsinki Human Resources Department organises training and coaching aimed at supporting language learning and enhancing the experience that every employee is an equal member of their work community.

Your job will include tasks related to supporting and enhancing language learning, such as planning and carrying out workshops for work communities in cooperation with your colleagues. You will identify, test and evaluate different applications and software related to translation. You will also have the opportunity to work on models and tools for developing diversity and multiculturalism to support work communities. One of your duties is also to learn Finnish yourself and test the learning materials, applications and multilingual practices on our workplace.

The position is meant for a person whose native language is neither Finnish nor Swedish. Here at the Department of Human Resources, you will find a warm and inspiring work community. We will support you in your internship, and you will have the opportunity to work on development tasks that promote the inclusion of a diverse staff. You will work in a team that provides services to the City’s supervisors and work communities across the City organisation. The team’s role includes developing various aspects of leadership and supervisory work, supporting career development, and developing approaches to success management and skills management.

In accordance with its strategy, Helsinki wants to be a City where people can fulfil themselves, create opportunities and seize them. The City offers good opportunities for training and development, as well as the employee benefits of a large employer. You will work in a new and spacious office in Ympyrätalo in Hakaniemi, Helsinki. You will also have the opportunity to work remotely part of the time (maximum 2-3 days/week).

After the closing date, we will invite some candidates for personal interviews.

As English will be the primary working language, fluency in both oral and written English is essential. Fluency in Finnish is not required, but basic knowledge of the language could be beneficial. We welcome candidates who are eager to learn Finnish during their training period and we will also support you with your Finnish speaking skills.

You are currently pursuing a master’s degree in an international degree programme of a university or a university of applied sciences. Education in a relevant field, such as social sciences, political sciences, business, communication or the humanities, is beneficial but not obligatory for the position.
