Job offer : Internship on Device Optimization through Advanced Characterization of Perovskite Solar Cells and Modelling
Contract type : Internship
⏳Duration : 6 months
Starting date : 01/03/2027
Location : Palaiseau (91120)
Formation : M2, Engineering school in solid state physics/material science, Modeling, Energy Environment Science Technology
Context :
The Île-de-France Photovoltaic Institute (IPVF), is an institute for the energy transition created in 2013. It is a scientific and technical center dedicated to the research and development of solar technologies. Located on Paris-Saclay campus, it brings together its own staff, employees of its partners, and those of external companies. The IPVF aims to become one of the world's leading centers for research, innovation, and training in the field of energy transition.
The IPVF's primary objective is to improve the performance and competitiveness of photovoltaic cells and to develop breakthrough technologies by leveraging four key drivers:
• An ambitious research program;
• Hosting 150 researchers and their laboratories on Paris-Saclay campus
• A cutting-edge technological platform (8,000 m²) open to stakeholders in the photovoltaic industry, and housing more than 100 state-of-the-art equipment units housed in clean rooms.
• A training program mainly based on a master's degree, supervision of doctoral students, and continuing education
Context and architecture optimisations at IPVF :
Perovskite solar cells are intensively investigated at IPVF and researchers collaborate to develop better performing and more reliable devices which are crucial for the next generation of solar cells. This includes developing fabrication processes and characterizing materials and devices along fabrication steps, all supported by theoretical studies.
Performances are optimized through fabrication, characterization and modeling of the properties. This results in a lot of knowledge and data which can be used to support advanced modeling. Electronic and optical behavior of layers and interfaces can be modeled to support to reliable and performant technological choices.
Main missions :
Good understanding of this baseline behavior can enable to simulate the stack using drift diffusion simulations and reproduce experimental data to establish a realistic numerical twin of the stack that could then evolve to guide device stack evolution towards higher PCEs. The simulations will be performed using Setfos, enabling the optical and electrical properties of the individual layers and their interactions within the complete device stack to be investigated.
Missions are as follows:
- Perform J–V characterization, for example at different scan-rates, and EQE measurements in the lab to generate some of the data needed to model the photovoltaics stack (and gain understanding about real life device operation)
- Full-device modelling of perovskite solar cells, with the aim of reproducing and interpreting experimental measurements obtained in the laboratory. The modelling will include the reproduction of current density-voltage (J–V), external quantum efficiency (EQE), and photoluminescence (PL) measurements.
- Identify limiting interfaces or layers, optimize the device architecture through modelling and provide guidelines for improving the performance of perovskite solar cells from both optical and electrical perspectives.
