Energy Marshal

The Energy Marshal is responsible for overseeing and assuring all hazardous energy control activities across data centre construction and commissioning projects. This includes lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), electrical switching, and isolation procedures to ensure safe execution of works without risk to people or assets.

The role acts as an independent assurance function, ensuring compliance with legislation, industry standards, and project safety procedures across all contractors and commissioning activities.
 

Key Responsibilities
 

Energy Isolation & Safety Assurance

• Oversee implementation of energy isolation and LOTO procedures

• Ensure compliance with standards, legislation, and project requirements

• Challenge and stop unsafe energy-related practices

Planning & Coordination

• Support planning of electrical and mechanical isolations across construction and commissioning

• Coordinate high-risk switching and isolation activities (including SIMOPS)

• Support Authorised Persons and contractors in safe execution

Operations Interface

• Liaise with operations teams for live or sensitive systems

• Ensure isolations and energisations are fully coordinated and approved

• Minimise operational risk and service disruption

Auditing & Compliance

• Audit contractor compliance with isolation procedures and permit-to-work systems

• Verify correct execution of LOTO and switching activities on site

• Support incident investigation and corrective actions

Communication & Coordination

• Work with commissioning, safety, and project teams

• Provide clear guidance on energy risks and controls

• Promote best practice across contractors

Requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

• Experience in MV/LV switching in data centre or mission-critical environments

• Experience as Senior Authorised Person (SAP)

• Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and stored energy risks

• Ability to read single-line diagrams and technical schematics

• Strong safety mindset and attention to detail

• Good communication and coordination skills
