Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Translational Control During Embryogenesis

Arbeitsbeschreibung - Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Translational Control During Embryogenesis

The lab of Madalena Reimão Pinto investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of mRNA translation during zebrafish embryogenesis. This research combines the power of the zebrafish embryo with RNA biochemistry, massively parallel reporter assays, next-generation sequencing, computational and imaging approaches to tackle these questions. Key aims are to uncover how mRNA 5′ UTR sequence motifs control translational dynamics, to identify the relevant RNA-binding proteins, and to understand their roles in embryogenesis. The group offers an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and technologies. The lab’s vision is to provide an environment where exciting discoveries in RNA biology in the context of embryogenesis can be made, and to support and develop the skills and careers of lab members. English is the working language of the institute and we are building a collaborative, international, and inclusive team.

The lab has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to join the team and drive independent projects exploring the 5' UTR sequence determinants of translational control during embryogenesis. We are seeking a motivated, independent scientist with experience in RNA biology, molecular/developmental biology, biochemistry and/or computational analysis of sequencing data to contribute to ongoing research projects and publications.

Your Role

As a postdoc in the Reimão Pinto group, you will drive independent and collaborative research to dissect the role of 5' UTR motifs using biochemical, high-throughput functional genomics and in vivo approaches. Depending on your background and interests, you may contribute to:

  • Designing and employing massively parallel reporter assays in zebrafish embryos
  • Establishing biochemical and genetic assays for identifying and characterizing the role of candidate RNA binding proteins in embryogenesis
  • Developing biochemical assays to define the role of 5' UTR motifs on translation initiation
  • Developing computational tools for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data

You will also present your findings at internal meetings and international conferences, contribute to publications, and support a positive and collegial team culture.

Essential qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related life-science field.
  • Strong technical expertise in one of the following fields: RNA biochemistry, molecular biology, Python/R programming, developmental biology.
  • Experience in independently planning and executing scientific projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong motivation, reliability, and ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Commitment to contribute to a mutually supportive and respectful lab culture.

Desirable skills

  • Knowledge and hands-on expertise in gene editing tools and the zebrafish embryo model.
  • Experience in functional genomics and high-throughput assays.
  • Experience in machine learning algorithms and tools.
  • Experience in microscopy and image analysis.
  • Effective collaboration in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and persistence in experimental work.

Our offer

  • A full-time position in a vibrant, international research environment.
  • An initial contract of 2 years, with the possibility of extension upon mutual agreement.
  • Salary and social benefits in accordance with TVöD Bund (up to EG13, based on experience).
  • Attractive public-sector benefits (30 days annual leave, full social coverage, VBL pension).
  • Discounted public-transport job ticket (VVO) and excellent transport connections.
  • Support for work–life balance, including assistance with family and childcare matters.
  • A broad network for career development and training through the Max Planck Society.
