Arbeitsbeschreibung - Senior Backend Engineer (f/d/m) Ruby on Rails

Please note: The part-time scope is 80-100%. You can use our office in Berlin or work completely remotely within Germany.

You want to use your Ruby on Rails experience for a good cause? You want to contribute to a product that makes a difference? You want to play a key role in our development team to drive the growth of Koalect by RaiseNow, an innovative Tech4Good company?

As Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/d) in our team you will improve and extend our product with end-to-end responsibility. You are involved in everything from research, coding, testing and deploying to documentation.

Design, development and maintenance of our Koalect services
Technical (and related product) research for extending the current set of features on Koalect services
You share your findings with other team members, including documentation
Operational tasks in keeping Koalect stable, incl. monitoring and On-Call duty (additionally compensated)
Cross-Team coordination to bring new features live
Ensure code quality by performing code reviews and coaching junior team members
Educate the team about your experience, by creating learning paths & organising knowledge sharing sessions
Maintenance and improvement of the AWS infrastructure to ensure availability of the services in a DevOps mindset

Proficiency in the ecosystem of Ruby on Rails
Knowledge of RESTful APIs and event-driven systems (designing and reasoning)
Proficiency in AWS (EC2, ECS, EBS, RDS) and ER database systems like PostgreSQL
Good knowledge of docker and docker compose
Familiar with unit and functional testing as well as code reviews, git workflows, and continuous delivery approach
Fluent in written and verbal English (at least C1)
Striving for simplicity and when it’s not possible, keeping an eye on the devil in the details

Nice to have:

Knowledge with Bitbucket CI pipelines
Experience in server administrations (linux), bash scripting
Familiarity with security concerns in AWS

Ruby 3.2.2
Ruby on Rails 7.2 (moving to 8 Q4 2025)
Cucumber for functionals behaviour driven tests
PostgreSQL 13 (master/master for replication), Redis
ELK stack
Docker containers for CI/CD, dev and production
CI/CD on bitbucket pipelines
Services are hosted on AWS: ElasticBeanstalk, SQS, S3, lambda, EC2, RDS, ElastiCache, Route53, CloudFront
Vue.JS 2/3

You’ll become an expert in Koalect concepts. In particular

How to develop software at a large scale - reliably and securely
