Overview
The Secondary School Counsellor with a focus on careers and college advice serves as a vital resource in guiding students through their academic journey, particularly in navigating career pathways and preparing for post-secondary education. This role entails providing individualised support, facilitating workshops, fostering partnerships, and staying updated on relevant resources to empower students in making informed decisions about their futures.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Career Exploration: Offer personalised guidance to students in exploring potential career options, considering their interests, skills, and values. Utilise various assessment tools and resources to help students gain insights into their career preferences and aptitudes.
2. College Preparation: Assist students in understanding the college application process, including researching colleges, preparing application materials, and meeting admission requirements.
3. Individual Counselling: Conduct one-on-one counselling sessions with students to address their specific career and college-related concerns, including academic planning, goal setting, and addressing barriers to success.
4. Group Workshops: Organise and facilitate workshops on topics relevant to career exploration, college admissions, study skills, and time management. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure workshops meet the diverse needs of students.
5. College Visits and Fairs: Coordinate opportunities for students to attend college fairs, and engage in informational sessions. Provide guidance on making the most of these experiences and connecting with college representatives.
6. Resume and Cover Letter Assistance: Offer guidance and support to students in creating professional resumes, cover letters, and personal statements for college applications, internships, and employment opportunities. Provide feedback to help students effectively showcase their skills and experiences.
7. Career Development Resources: Curate and maintain a comprehensive collection of career development resources, including online tools, websites, books, and industry publications. Stay informed about emerging trends and opportunities in various career fields.
8. Partnership Building: Establish and nurture relationships with college admissions representatives, career professionals, community organisations, employers, and alumni networks to expand opportunities and resources available to students. Collaborate on initiatives to enhance career and college readiness.
9. Parent/Guardian Communication: Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on students' progress, share resources, and address concerns related to academic and career planning. Foster a collaborative partnership with parents/guardians in supporting students' aspirations.
10. Data Management: Maintain accurate records of student interactions, counselling sessions, college applications, and other relevant data. Use data analysis to assess program effectiveness, track student outcomes, and inform decision-making.
11. Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities, including workshops, conferences, and training sessions, to stay abreast of best practices, emerging trends, and changes in education, counselling, and career development.
