The Deputy Hort Leader supports the leadership and daily operations of the Hort and Holiday Hort programmes. In close collaboration with the Hort Leader, the Deputy ensures the smooth running of logistical, administrative, and educational aspects of the programme. The Deputy Hort Leader steps into the leadership role in the absence of the Hort Leader and supports the implementation of the school’s values and vision, contributing to the positive development of students in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Leadership and Management:
Support the Hort Leader in managing daily operations and team coordination of the Hort and Holiday Hort programmes.
Assume full leadership responsibility in the absence of the Hort Leader, ensuring continuity in supervision, administration, and communication.
Identify, initiate, and execute projects that support and enhance the goals of the Hort and Primary programmes, in close collaboration with leadership and educational teams.
Coordinate daily logistical planning for the Hort, including:
Staff scheduling and absence tracking
Duty plans in coordination with the Assistant Principal
Educator timetables for Hort and in-class support
Daily running of the Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) programme during Hort time
Organising cover arrangements
Act as the main contact for operational matters (e.g., budgeting support, facility use, purchasing, finance tracking).
Participate in the planning, implementation, and coordination of the Holiday Hort programme.
Welcome, onboard, and train new Hort staff in daily routines, school protocols, and emergency procedures.
Maintain safety and supervision systems, including oversight of sign-out assistants and student tracking processes.
Pedagogical and Student Support
Act as an educator during Hort time, Holiday Hort, break times, and, if required, during academic classes.
Collaborate with the Hort and Primary teams as well as the school counselling team to implement best practices for behaviour and social-emotional development.
Provide support and guidance to the team on student well-being, behaviour concerns, and pedagogical strategies.
Engage with families around student behaviour and social-emotional support.
Team Development and Administration
Assist in recruitment processes for Hort team members, including conducting interviews and making recommendations.
Provide mentoring and support for interns, volunteers, sign-out assistants, and trainee staff.
Supervise and coordinate room preparation and ensure appropriate usage of spaces.
Facilitate team communication by chairing weekly team meetings in the Hort Leader's absence.
Support the implementation of the professional growth programme by providing feedback to team members and mentoring as needed.
Oversee relevant data tracking systems, documentation, and communication tools related to Hort operations.
Communication and Community Engagement
Serve as a point of contact for parents, students, and staff during the Hort Leader’s absence.
Communicate regularly with families regarding daily routines, special events, and general information through established channels (e.g., Hort info board, newsletters).
Foster a strong sense of community and collaboration among the Hort team, students, and families.
Ensure that all external representations of the Hort programme are aligned with internal values and messages.
Bachelor or Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Social Pedagogy, or a related field, or recognised qualification as State Approved Educator/Childhood Pedagogue (as per Saxony's qualification ordinance)
First leadership experience in an educational setting, ideally as a deputy or team coordinator
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently and structure tasks efficiently
Strong interpersonal, intercultural, and communication skills
Ability to maintain composure and provide solutions in dynamic day-to-day operations
High level of commitment to student well-being and positive team culture
Fluency in both English and German
