Internship: Variable Rate Functionality in Learned Video Compression (m/f/d)

Huawei's Munich Research Center is responsible for advanced technology research, architectural development, design, and strategic engineering of our products.

The Audiovisual Technology Lab at Huawei Munich Research Center develops innovative technologies in media sensing, processing, coding, and computer vision. The new international image coding standard – JPEG AI – is fully based on neural networks. From now on, the research focus has shifted toward video coding standard development.

To support our research activities, we are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Intern (m/f/d) who will contribute to the research and development of end-to-end AI-based video coding solutions, with a particular focus on the development of variable rate coding functionality. Candidates who successfully complete the internship might be offered a PhD candidate position. The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to attend international conferences and present the developed technologies to the international standardization community. You will be integrated into an international and experienced team of researchers.

Your mission:

• Research innovative algorithms in the field of learning-based video compression


• Research training methods for learnable video coding algorithms


• Develop and implement variable rate functionality and conduct rate matching


• Implement innovative algorithms on reference software


• Generate papers and technical reports

Your areas of expertise:

• Currently completing your master’s degree in electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, mathematics, or physics


• Deep interest in media compression and artificial intelligence topics


• Experience in research on variable rate functionality and rate matching


• Enjoy working in a team and collaborating with researchers to develop creative solutions


• Fluent in English (written and spoken)


• Basic understanding of CNN structure and training


• Excellent software skills
