Master Thesis Stability Analysis of Running-In Processes Using Entropy-Based Methods

Arbeitsbeschreibung - Master Thesis Stability Analysis of Running-In Processes Using Entropy-Based Methods

Company Description

At Bosch, we shape the future by inventing high-quality technologies and services that spark enthusiasm and enrich people’s lives. Our promise to our associates is rock-solid: we grow together, we enjoy our work, and we inspire each other. Join in and feel the difference.

The Robert Bosch GmbH is looking forward to your application!

Job Description

During contact and relative motion of technical surfaces, energy is dissipated through mechanisms such as plastic deformation, particle generation, surface oxidation, film shearing and heat. From an engineering perspective, it is important to understand whether and under which conditions (materials, surface finish, operating conditions, etc.) the resulting running-in state is stable. The relative contribution of these processes determines the evolving surface topography and health of a tribological contact.

  • You will begin your thesis with a literature review of entropy-based approaches for describing wear and running-in processes.
  • Building on contact mechanics models developed in our department, leading-edge experimental methods and the identified literature, you will then conceptualize and model the surface state after running-in.
  • Finally, you will critically assess the applicability and potential of entropy-based methods for improving the understanding and modelling of running-in in tribological contacts.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master studies in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Applied Mathematics or comparable with good and very good grades
  • Experience and Knowledge: in Thermodynamics and Mathematical Modelling; experience in Python and/or MATLAB; strong background in Physics, Chemistry, or Physical Chemistry; ideally familiarity with concepts of Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics and Contact Mechanics
  • Personality and Working Practice: you excel at structuring your workflow effectively and executing commitments with consistent self-discipline
  • Work Routine: your on-site presence is required
  • Languages: very good in English and good in German
