In Platform Engineering, we focus on building self-service tools and high-performance platforms that scale, supporting all our customers and products. We empower our engineers and operations teams to take control of their own work and provide the resources they need to work efficiently and effectively. Database Platform Engineers are experts who combine database engineering, database administration and software engineering. They bring database expertise (PostgreSQL) to platform engineering, supporting our software engineers and customer operations team. They apply mature engineering principles using automation to solve the unique challenges in the lottery industry, helping us scale to hundreds of thousand concurrent users.

As part of your everyday responsibilities, you will:

  • As an experienced database platform engineer, you will be acting as the technical authority within Platform Engineering for Allwyn Lottery Solutions database systems, both in production and non-production environments.

Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Improve the architecture of our existing database systems so that they are designed to meet the requirements of our customers that scale to hundreds of thousands of concurrent users.
  • Collaborating with software engineering in designing, updating, and implementing database schemas.
  • Optimise database performance through indexing and query optimization techniques.
  • Work on observability of relevant database metrics and make sure we reach our database objectives.
  • Collaborate with development teams to enhance the operational aspects of their systems.
  • Writing technical documentation, including runbooks and incident models for the Support teams, and maintaining knowledge of new technologies and updates for our supported databases.
  • Provide database expertise to engineering teams (for example through reviews of database migrations, queries, performance optimizations and database design).
  • Mentoring platform engineering and customer operations team
  • Acting as an escalation contact for high-impact production issues, including out-of-hours
  • Perform tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity

Requirements

Key qualifications for your success: 

  • At least 4 years of experience supporting busy transactional RDMS and NoSQL systems
  • Demonstrate proficiency in at least one programming language. Preferred languages include Python and Golang.
  • Troubleshooting and performance analysis
  • Performing schema reviews
  • Mentoring engineering and other technical teams on database internals
  • Automation of database installations, configuration, and tuning
  • Extensive knowledge of PostgreSQL
  • In-depth theoretical knowledge of database systems including but not limited to indexes, partitioning, transactions, storage, replication, networking, authentication, clustering, and sharding
  • Excellent knowledge of database backup and recovery
  • A demonstrable, good level of knowledge in the following areas
    • Linux, terminal, and command line tools
    • Network protocols;  
    • Infrastructure as code (ansible)
  • Scripting skills (any of Go, Python, Bash)
  • Linux Containers, Docker, and associated ecosystem of tools
  • Excellent English language skills

It would be highly advantageous if you had:

  • Knowledge of newer versions of PostgreSQL
  • Cloud technologies, especially AWS RDS, AWS Aurora.
  • Working knowledge of other database systems both RDBMS and NoSQL (Oracle, DB2, Cassandra, Redis)
  • Some programming experience/background
  • Kubernetes
