Job Description - Curator, M+ Museum

M+ is a museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, design and architecture, moving image, and Hong Kong visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Located in Hong Kong’s WestK, we are one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world. The museum reflects our unique time and place, building on Hong Kong’s historic balance of the local and the international to define a distinctive and innovative voice for Asia’s twenty-first century. 

Reporting to the Senior Curator and Associate Director, Curatorial Affairs

The Curator of Interdisciplinary Visual Culture is a new role that provides research and programming support for the the Curatorial Affairs Department. The role will develop research to articulate M+’s curatorial vision of exhibiting, collecting, and interpreting Asian visual culture within a global context, bridging the fields of design and architecture, moving image, and visual art.  The research will articulate and deepen interdisciplinary narratives of visual culture relevant to M+ exhibitions, publications, and collections, and produce interpretive content and public programmes that engage the museum’s diverse publics.

The Curator will conduct research for exhibitions and publications, and on works in the M+ Collections. They will work closely with the Design and Architecture, Moving Image, and Visual Art curatorial teams, as well as with colleagues across Learning and Interpretation, Collections, Digital, Editorial and Publishing, and Exhibitions, to support and shape the presentation, publication, and promotion of M+ programmes and collections.

You will be responsible for:

  • facilitating new and ongoing research and writing on Asian visual culture for exhibitions, publications, public programmes, and online content across the fields of Visual Art, Design and Architecture, and Moving Image;
  • developing and organising public programmes in collaboration with Curatorial and Curatorial Affairs teams, such as talks, panel discussions, and performances, that support M+ research, exhibitions and collection displays;
  • planning and coordination of curatorial projects, such as exhibitions and displays, working with other curatorial teams where required;
  • organising meetings in relation to curatorial planning and strategic development with other curatorial teams and relevant external parties;
  • sharing and applying research findings across the Curatorial, Learning and Interpretation, and Digital teams that could contribute to content creation, planning and reporting activities; and
  • performing any other duties as reasonably directed by M+ from time to time.

You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree relevant to Contemporary Art, Art History, Visual Culture, Museum Studies, Film Studies, Architecture, Design or other related disciplines;
  • have at least 10 years of relevant experience in the fields of curating, curatorial programming, contemporary art discourse and knowledge production;
  • showcase an excellent knowledge of contemporary visual culture with a solid understanding of the art field in China and wider Asia;
  • possess solid experience of working in a museum setting or a large-scale arts organisation with international scope; and
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Chinese;
  • have strong organisational skills, able to work collaboratively and with tight timeframes and competing priorities.
