The Advanced Life Sciences and Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (LSMS) is a central research facility of Hong Kong Baptist University dedicated to driving transdisciplinary research.  Equipped with advanced mass spectrometers, MALDI imaging systems, and life science facilities, LSMS invites applications for a highly motivated Scientific Officer to join its core team.

Responsibilities:

1. Operations & Maintenance
   
   
   
   • Oversee daily operations, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance to ensure peak performance and minimal downtime; 
   
   
   • Enforce lab safety, general policies, regulatory compliance, and access and usage protocols;
   
   
   • Administer fee-for-service charging schemes, procurement and management of chemicals and consumables, and track wear-and-tear components; and
   
   
   • Prepare administrative, usage, and statistical documents and reports.
     
      
   
   


2. Training & User Support
   
   
   
   • Manage training schedules, instrument bookings, and enquiries;
   
   
   • Design and conduct instrument training and practical workshops for users;
   
   
   • Provide technical consultations on experimental design, sample preparation, and data interpretation; and
   
   
   • Provide hands-on user support and technical assistance during equipment operation.
     
      
   
   


3. Projects & Engagement
   
   
   
   • Support research, collaborative, and consultancy projects by contributing technical expertise and facility resource plans (e.g. writing technical methodology, preparing preliminary data, and estimating service budgets); and 
   
   
   • Organise promotional campaigns, technical seminars, and engagement events to maximise facility utilisation and visibility.
   
   

The appointee will also be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

Applicants should possess a recognised degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline (preferably a PhD, or a Master’s/Bachelor’s degree with substantial technical experience), with at least three years of relevant experience including solid hands-on skills in operating the analytical instruments.  Experience in lab facility management within a higher education institution, or a technical specialist role with relevant instrument manufacturers, will be a definite advantage.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following qualities and competencies:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Chinese;


• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in handling scientific data, service billing, statistics, and safety and policy compliance;


• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to bridge student, academic, and industry interests, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and maintain clear information flow;


• Proficiency in managing and analysing operational and usage data, using effective presentation tools to highlight key information and support decision-making; and


• A proactive, reliable, self-motivated multitasker who takes ownership of deliverables and thrives in a dynamic environment.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a written test. The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term, gratuity-bearing contract of one year. Contract renewal is subject to mutual agreement.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
