Job Description - Teacher Of English

Role Purpose

  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English.
  • To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission.

    Accountabilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality English language lessons which meet the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning styles – up to the number of contracted teaching hours
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy and sense of progress
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK
  • Assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service and upholding British Council Values and Behaviours
  • Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas: Child protection Equal Opportunity and Diversity Health and safety

    Qualifications


    Essentials

  • Cambridge CELTA/ Trinity Cert TESOL
  • Undergraduate/University degree in any discipline

    Desirables

  • Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Diploma or equivalent
  • PGCE/B.Ed. in Primary/Secondary or equivalent
  • CELT-YL extension/TYLEC
  •  
    Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years full-time post-TEFL qualification (CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL) teaching experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups: Young learners < 4 (400+ hours) Young learners aged 4 to 7 (400+ hours) Young learners aged 8 to 12 (400+ hours) Young learner aged 13 to 17 (400+ hours) Adults 18+ (400+hours)

    Salary & Benefits

    Salary : In the region ranges from 25,846 HKD to 33,722 HKD. In addition, as a teacher working a 35-hour week, you will receive a non-accountable, taxable housing allowance of HK$2,688 per month.
    Job Start date : 1st August 2024
    Contract type: Fixed term - 24 months 
    Fare and travel allowance : Teachers recruited from outside Hong Kong will receive economy class travel for the member of staff, accompanying partner and children, from their previous post or from the UK, which will be reimbursed on arrival in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong centre.
    Baggage allowance: For teachers relocating to Hong Kong, an accountable allowance of £1,200 for the unaccompanied staff or £2,000 for staff with accompanying partners and/or children per transfer is paid by the receiving centre.
    Settling-in allowances : There is a settling-in allowance of HK$13,000 (for unaccompanied staff) or HK$19,500 (for accompanied staff) for teachers relocating to Hong Kong to help you to meet your initial expenses
    Annual Leaves : 35 days paid leave per year plus 18 public holidays.
    Medical allowance: You will be registered with British Council's group medical insurance scheme, currently managed and administered by Allianz.
    Work Schedule : The working week is Wednesday to Sunday (with a Monday and Tuesday weekend) or Saturday to Wednesday (with a Thursday and Friday weekend) depending on operational requirements but not changing without prior consultation and adequate notice.Working hours can involve regular evenings up to 9:45pm and may involve travel to branch and offsite centres around Hong Kong.
