Job Description - Editorial Associate/Editorial Assistant

About Us

Established in 2012, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO) is the official publication of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the Academy of Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO). It is a purely electronic, open-access, SCI-indexed journal with an impact factor of 4.4, ranking 7th out of 62 eye journals in the world in 2023.

Through the journal, we aim to keep our readers abreast of the latest developments in clinical ophthalmology, innovative technology, and visual science through publishing high-quality articles.

We are now looking for suitable candidates for the following positions:

1) Editorial Associate

About the Role

The Editorial Associate will be the supervisor of the journal office with the primary responsibility of managing the day-to-day operation of the journal. This requires frequent and prompt contact with authors, reviewers, the publisher, Editors-in-Chief, and Editorial Board Members.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and ensure a smooth daily operation of the journal office
  • Invite reviewers for new submissions
  • Consolidate completed reviews for the decision of Editors-in-Chief
  • Act as the gatekeeper and perform English technical editing; and have a final review on production proofs before publication
  • Work closely with the publisher regarding production and publication schedules
  • Research and commission experts to contribute articles according to the instructions of Editors-in-Chief
  • Analyze and monitor the journal’s performance including citations and impact factor
  • Prepare proposals, executive reports, and protocols for side projects when necessary
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Editors-in-Chief

Requirements:

  • At least 4 to 5 years of work experience in English editing, preferably in education/ publishing industry
  • Have a degree in English, Translation, Communication, or equivalent; scientific literacy will be an advantage but not a must
  • Good at written and spoken English, fluency in Mandarin is advantage
  • An organized and meticulous person who is prompt, detailed-minded, and can plan carefully
  • Be able to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and to prioritize individually
  • Be able to work collaboratively or individually
  • Be PC proficient with expertise in Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Less experience will be considered as Editorial Assistant

This is a full-time position with 5-day work per week. Work location will be in Central, Hong Kong. We offer competitive remuneration package, fringe benefits, and overtime allowance. 2) Editorial Assistant

About the Role

The Editorial Assistant will be directly reporting to the Editorial Associate and assist the Editorial Associate to perform the day-to-day operation of the journal. You will be able to gain international exposure by frequently working with well-respected ophthalmologists and teams from around the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to daily inquiries to the journal office
  • Collect new submissions for review of the journal editor, and inform authors of the results
  • Assist in inviting reviewers for new submissions
  • Copyedit manuscripts according to house style and review production proofs for publication
  • Make sure each journal issue is updated on the official website, PubMed, and Web of Science after published
  • Draft correspondence such as invitations to invited authors and other communications
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Editorial Associate or Editors-in-Chief

Requirements:

  • Have a degree in English, Translation, Communication, or equivalent
  • Good at written and spoken English, fluency in Mandarin is advantage
  • Willing to learn, diligent, and the ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Be able to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and to prioritize individually
  • Be able to work collaboratively or individually without continuous supervision
  • Be PC proficient with expertise in Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel)
