JOB DESCRIPTION

West Island School is seeking a part-time Teacher of Physical & Health Education (PHE) starting from August 2024 to August 2025 to join a highly successful team. The position will be a part-time one year contract (c. 50% in the first instance).

Working with a team of six specialist teachers and two assistants, you will be an enthusiastic and collaborative teacher who is passionate about PHE across the age and ability range aged 11-18. Our students are taught in either mixed or single-sex groups depending on the sport and grade level.

PHE is taught as part of the MYP framework for students between the ages of 11-14 using inquiry approaches and promoting conceptual understanding. While direct experience of the program is not essential, a willingness to learn and empathy for inquiry-based approaches is needed. From 14-16, all students follow a core programme of sports, health, and fitness training. Some students also take iGCSE PHE as an examined course and many participate in our Sports Leadership course. All Post 16 students follow a core programme which includes fitness, exercise, and team sports with a number of students choosing to study BTec Level 3 and/or IB Sports Science at either Standard or Higher level.

At West Island School, teachers of PHE demonstrate exceptional commitment to student success. As a result, we have very high participation rates in extra-curricular programmes and school sports teams as well as exceptional athletic performance. We have a swimming pool, double-height gym, weights room, and sports pitches as well as use of HKU sporting facilities for school-wide events.

The school has an enviable record of sporting excellence throughout Hong Kong, nurturing Athletes who progress to the club and national teams, including a former Olympian. Many staff from other faulty areas are also involved in teaching PHE or coaching sports teams to match the needs and ambitions of sports teams. The school has been a runner-up and winner of the Bauhinia Bowl for best overall co-educational school in Hong Kong as well as receiving awards for individual student performances and teams who achieve the top in their league. Consequently, the successful candidate will contribute fully to extracurricular sports and should outline the areas they have a particular coaching experience or expertise.

All teachers at West Island School are tutors to a group of approximately 15 students within a particular year group and you should be able to demonstrate a commitment to the holistic development of young people through pastoral work. It is essential that you are willing and able to contribute to the wider life of our school such as leading overseas visits and trips.

In return for your passion and delivering quality education, we offer a highly competitive pay. Our strength as part of the English Schools Foundation means that we offer security and the opportunities that are inherent in an established organization of our size.

Please refer to the ESF recruitment website as well as our own school-based website for further information. If we have missed anything in the details that follow, don’t hesitate to contact us for further information about the school or living in Hong Kong.
