JOB PURPOSE
Janes is seeking skilled and motivated Military Events Analyst to join its Current Military Intelligence Team which provides comprehensive and connected data on the military activities of global military forces. The role is expected to conduct open-source and multi-source intelligence research to support a vast variety of fast-paced and complex investigations regarding state-actors' military forces.
The role requires understanding of military operations, defence equipment and systems, and hands on experience working in data-driven environments. It focuses on the analysis of events relevant to the tactical and operational levels of warfare.
This role is exclusively about military affairs and military operations. Candidates with experience only in the geopolitical field will not be considered.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AT JANES:The successful candidate will be able to support Current Military Intelligence by independently tracking military activities in specific areas of interest linking current military events to Janes unrivalled foundational data.
The role also requires the ability to effectively communicate and present the outputs of the intelligence cycle in order to regularly deliver data-driven insights and analysis to Janes customers or major media outlets.
The ideal candidate will be able to work in a dynamic and structured environment regulated by intelligence collection plans and matrixed workflows with multiple high-value projects arising at short notice.
The analyst will also require to actively collaborate with other Janes teams to support qualitative products on Political and Socio-economic matters influenced by or influencing military affairs.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Excellent English writing and communication skills.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in intelligence, defence and security studies, or similar (international affairs/political science will be considered only if coupled with proven knowledge of military operations or equipment)
Proven knowledge of one or more or the following: NATO, Russian, or APAC tactical and operational military affairs.
This role is NOT about geopolitics.
Ideally, previous experience in academia/Think-tank (Defence and Security studies), government (Defence and Security), or companies who support Government in Defence and Security matters.
DESIRABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Previous military experience would be a significant advantage.
Knowledge of military assets/platforms/doctrines/procedures, with military service or defence analyst experience beneficial.
Open-source intelligence research skills, including familiarity with social media and imagery intelligence.
Proficiency in one or more of the following languages will be a plus: Russian, Farsi, Chinese, Korean
Technical skills in Python, data visualisation, and GIS beneficial.
