In this role, you have the opportunity for design, development and Supplier & CFT co-ordination on various programs spanning across functions within Philips to deliver successful remediation, relaunch (MLD) and NPI of a complete product development for Sleep and Respiratory Care Business within Philips.
  • The Mechanical Architect defines the structure of the subsystem that is to be developed, based upon customer requirements/product specifications and technology trends. He defines the way in which the subsystem must be divided into separate components and/or modules.
  • The Mechanical Architect defines remediation and re-launch scope for mechanical and mechatronics parts and sub systems based the internal and external observation from audit bodies.
  • The Mechanical Architect also formulates the technical roadmap for his subsystem, conducts innovation studies, and leads the introduction of new technologies.
  • Jobholder comes to an understanding with E2E development concerning the hardware/Mechanical and software interfaces and other development architects concerning interfaces.
  • By means of planned reviews he/she ensures - from technical point of view - that the efforts of the individual developers remain focused on properly functioning subsystems.
  • The Mechanical Architect is technically responsible for the correct functioning of the integrated subsystems
  • The Mechanical Architect should be able to lead development of Mechanical architecture parts and sub-system following MBSE methodology
You are responsible for
  • Lead DHF (design history file) remediation for mechanical engineering deliverables which includes defining strategy and planning, gap analysis, creating new and revising DHFs, reviewing and releasing DHFs.
  • DHF's accountability and responsibility for mechanical and mechatronic parts and sub systems (Gas path, valves, sensors (air, O2 and Pressure), manifold, patient interface, solenoid valves, filters, blowers, motors, and enclosure).
  • Review, mentor correctness and approve design documentation including requirements specification, design docs, engineering analysis & simulation studies, calculations, capture, test plans, test procedures, test records & reports.
  • Creation of the Mechanical architecture in modular, easy to maintain and extendible (components and modules) and re-usable.
  • The Mechanical architect would ensure that the proposed architecture would have the safety and reliability features build in.
  • The Mechanical architect is responsible for ensuring that architecture meets the performance criteria.
  • Formulates the technical roadmap, relevant for his subsystem considering technologies, application trends, conducts Concept & Feasibility studies. Leads the introduction of new technologies.
  • Technically responsible for the subsystem in (sub-) projects. Delegate, control and verify that the electronics is build according to his architecture. Verifies that the integration is according to the architecture.
  • Ensures the mutual consistency and efficient integration of the separate components in modular, easy-to-maintain electronics that meets the product specification.
  • Guides the Mechanical Engineers & Designers in the design and implementation of the parts of a subsystem.
  • Participates in the system architecture definition and in the Product. Requirement Specification advises the System Architect regarding choices of what must be achieved in hardware and what in software (multidisciplinary) and advises on make-or-buy decisions.
  • Determines required subsystem interface (hardware/software) in close consultation with software experts.
  • Contributes to the Work Breakdown Structure/ the planning process of his/her area. Draws up personal schedule and reports on progress.
  • Has expertise in design techniques, application domain and engineering. Keeps it up-to-date and propagates it, both internal and external.
  • Advises on internal development or outsourcing.
  • Managing R&D relationships with Engineering service suppliers.
  • Supervising design activities at the design partner, participating in design reviews and risk assessments (e.g. FMEA) and monitoring (technical) progress and technical risk mitigation.
  • Has an important say in the choice of development environment and has ultimate responsibility for the top-level design.
  • Networks with colleagues within BU and beyond and maintains external contacts for benchmarking, new technologies, tooling, design methods, and reflects them to the group.
  • Ability to create an environment to ensure maximized engagement of the department employees.
  • Is abreast of / participates in standards identification responsible for designing.
  • Formulates improvements within his own domain of expertise such as technical and process improvements etc.
  • Acts in line with departmental and project processes (QMS).
  • Support sustenance activities for continuum of sales and service of equipment and parts in the field considering quality of equipment and safety of patients.
  • Work in close co-ordination with PMG and manufacturing engineering for resolution of issues as they arise during sample build phases and actual production.
  • Lead CAPA activities for closure of CAPA with effective implementation of containment, corrective and preventive actions. Should be aware of RCA methodology following fishbone diagrams, probable, potential causes, replicating the problem for root cause, re-occurrence prevention etc.
  • Co-ordinate with CFT functions, resolve product and part issues and lead by example in communication and team work to win.
  • Lead and support product development following Philips product development methodology meeting specific goals for different milestones in co-ordination with designs, CFT and PMG functions.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience
  • Master/bachelor's in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering with 10 to 15 years of experience.
  • Ability to technically lead a team with a Domain Expertise in Machine Design, Mechanism Design, Mechatronic design, Pneumatics, thermal, Biocompatibility, Biosafety and toxicology and Materials & Value Engineering.
  • Analytical, creative, and intellectual thinker, with ability to perform mechanical design calculations & verify designs.
  • Good Knowledge of Manufacturing processes like Sheet Metal & Fabrication / Plastic / Machining, plating, and painting while designing.
  • Good knowledge, experience and awareness of materials used in the medical industry would be added advantage.
  • Excellent command on, skills like Reliability, DFSS (Design for Six Sigma), Risk Analysis, DFMEA, DFM, DFA, DFS, GD & T, Tolerance Stack up Analysis, etc.
  • Lateral thinker with bird's eye view, capable of finding an appropriate solution to complex problems.
  • Is capable to introduce new technologies and efficiency improvements on group level (change management).
  • Knowledge of and experience in hardware/software interfaces, understanding of cross functional operations.
  • Exposure to work on global environment, ability to communicate on different levels, good listener, coach and guide project team, with good presentation skills.
  • Working knowledge of CAD And Simulation Tools like ProE / SolidWorks / Windchill / Ansys Classic / Ansys Workbench will be added advantage.
  • Exposure to International Medical Quality and Regulatory Standards e.g. IEC, FDA, CFR, MDD, UL, CE, CSA, BIS etc will be added advantage.
  • Familiarity with FDA (Food and Drug Administration (USA)) quality systems including ISO13485, 21CFR Part820 (a plus).
  • Experience in the field of Medical Devices product design is an advantage.
  • Prior experience in following MBSE methodology in product design and development would be an added advantage.
