Assistant Urban Planner & Designer

The Assistant Urban Planner supports project teams with the analysis, investigation and development of urban planning strategies and master plans, considering natural, social, economic and built environment characteristics, as well as the specific cultural, political, institutional and administrative contexts for non-complex urban planning projects. He supports the development of preliminary and final maps, such as land use, zoning, transportation and infrastructure maps.

JOb Summery

The Assistant Urban Planner & Designer supports the planning, design, and development of urban environments, communities, and infrastructure projects. The role involves assisting in land-use planning, urban design studies, master planning, GIS analysis, stakeholder coordination, and preparation of planning reports and presentations. The position works closely with senior planners, architects, engineers, government agencies, and community stakeholders to create sustainable, functional, and aesthetically appealing urban spaces.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and understand the full scope of work, project schedule, and work breakdown structure.


• Lead the design visioning and conceptual development of master plans and urban design strategies.


• Coordinate urban design concepts with contextual and spatial analysis including land use, mobility, public realm, and environmental factors.


• Translate development principles and planning policies into high-quality design outputs.


• Develop and evaluate multiple conceptual alternatives and contribute to refinement and selection of preferred options.


• Prepare and oversee the production of key deliverables such as conceptual and detailed master plans, urban guidelines, design briefs, and development control documents.


• Coordinate with internal engineering and architectural disciplines and ensure the integration of infrastructure, sustainability, and place making principles.


• Prepare reports, drawings, and diagrams to support submissions, authority approvals, and client reviews.


• Attend design and stakeholder meetings, supporting the project manager in representing the design intent.


• Support the preparation of presentations, participate in design reviews, and respond to client comments and authority feedback.


• Undertake QA/QC of project deliverables, ensuring adherence to company standards and processes.


• At senior levels - mentor and support junior designers in design development and production tasks.

Responsbilities

• Support in identifying and reviewing readily available data , including maps and satellite images, etc.
• Coordinate base map and topographic data collection, including archived and newly acquired aerial photos, DTM, contour lines, etc.
• Develop a data inventory system and archive necessary data to share with project team members, as needed
• Support the development of data collection report for non-complex projects, highlighting all collected and missing data
• Provide mapping assistance for built environment surveys, as needed
• Work with Specialists on demographic, economic, environmental and legal studies and forecasts, as needed
• Support the development of conceptual thematic maps and graphics, as required
• Support Urban Planners with the refinement of design options, as per client feedback, and the preparation of preliminary draft plans and maps
• Participate in the development of preliminary and final maps, such as land use, zoning, transportation and infrastructure maps
• Support the development of implementation plans for urban planning projects, including phasing plans, action plans, cost estimates, etc.

• Upload design deliverables into K&A’s knowledge repository, as needed
• Attend periodic training to further develop relevant skills

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Urban Planning or Geography
• Certification / Diploma in GIS analysis is preferred
• Good analytical and problem solving skills
• Good organization and time management skills
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; Arabic is an advantage
