Consultant-Ecology

WSP is seeking for “Consultant-Ecology” to join our expanding technical function within the New Zealand wide national ecology team. This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to ecological data analysis, reporting, and project delivery while working closely with NZ-based ecologists.
This position is ideal for someone with experience in ecological consultancy who is eager to develop further, support senior colleagues, and contribute to technical excellence within WSP’s global ecology business.

  •  Support habitat loss/gain calculations, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, and ecological impact evaluations.
•    Assist in the use of digital tools (e.g., GIS, remote sensing, data visualization) to strengthen ecological deliverables.
•    Contribute to the preparation of habitat mitigation and compensation plans under New Zealand legislation.
•    Draft and review ecological reports such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), BNG assessments, and Nature Conservation (NC) reports under guidance from senior colleagues.
•    Collaborate with senior team members to ensure quality assurance and timely delivery of outputs.
•    Participate in knowledge sharing across global ecology teams and support proposal development activities.
•    Have a good appreciation of relevant legislation and maintains knowledge of appropriate technical standards, legislation, codes of practice and New Zealand norms. 
Required Skills & Behaviour
•    Experience in ecological consultancy or conservation science, with familiarity in AU, NZ, UK or relevant ecological standards and legislation.
•    Competence in ecological data handling, interpretation, and reporting.
•    Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting.
•    Working knowledge of GIS and spatial analysis tools.
•    Good interpersonal skills and willingness to learn from senior colleagues.
•    Problem-solving mindset with enthusiasm for innovation.
•    Understanding of biodiversity metrics and habitat condition assessments.
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ecological data management tools.

•    Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or a related discipline.
•    Relevant ecological qualifications or certifications will be considered an advantage. Experience of working on overseas (UK/AU/NZ) assignments preferred

Experience
•    Minimum of 4 years’ post qualification experience in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or a related discipline.
•    Demonstrable experience in using ArcGIS or QGIS, preferred.
