Job Description - Developer Relations Marketing Executive


Role Overview

Product and community marketing are core parts of Packt’s publishing system, and they ensure that each publication is given the awareness and publicity it needs to become a breakout product. Reporting to the Lead/Senior Publishing Product Manageris responsible for coordinating between the Author, Operations, and Commercial teams to ensure that our products are effectively marketed to their target audiences. This will involve ensuring Marketing Executive is also a community-centric and community-facing role responsible for outreach and community partnership development to ensure maximum exposure to the right audience for all Packt products.


What is Developer Relations (DevRel), and how does it contribute to Packt?

DevRel Marketing at Packt involves building authentic relationships with the developer community. The DevRel team is responsible for driving product awareness and visibility through product reviews, influencer marketing, editorial reviews, book forewords, conference sponsorships, and community partnerships.

These relationships enable visibility and awareness of our products and brand in the community.

The DevRel Marketing Executive is responsible for collaborating with community managers, influencers, tech creators, and organizations on outreach initiatives to drive awareness and visibility of products. The DevRel Marketing Executive is responsible for getting the product in front of the target audience through community networks. Building and nurturing relationships are key in this role.


Responsibilities

Product Marketing

  • Create a high-level marketing strategy at least 3 months before the product is published
  • Plan and implement activities for pre and post release marketing
  • Ensure that early-release copies are distributed to influential community members, websites, and events once a product is uploaded
  • Co-ordinate with stakeholders in Commercial, Publishing, and Amazon teams to create and deliver monthly individual product-level campaigns on Amazon
  • Co-ordinate with stakeholders in Commercial and Publishing teams to coordinate the release of extracted articles with backlinks on developer community websites
  • Community Outreach and Marketing

  • Build relationships with relevant outreach and community websites from the category to feature products on their site
  • Ensure backlinks for all products on relevant and high-traffic community sites
  • Drive first to market, community edition, and imprint product marketing for products. Ensure we have community networks to facilitate the marketing of these products.
  • Ensure product marketing through Newsletters by drafting content with support from the (Lead) S/PPM and Editorial team
  • Mentoring and Training

  • Leading by example by taking on high-priority products (First to market)product marketing strategies
  • Process Management

  • Support (Lead) SPPM by owning Product Marketing and coordination for the portfolio

  • Key Areas

  • Ensuring the following Marketing Initiatives on all products and maintaining a minimum monthly count of each -
  • Amazon Reviews
  • Editorial Reviews
  • Influencer Marketing
  • Outreach Activities – Collaborations/Backlinks, etc.
  • Working on expanding your community network and building strong relationships among developers

  • Skills

  • Lead generation: Ability to find leads on a particular topic and build a database of leads
  • Research and analysis: Research on the technology, topic area, and competition to fully comprehend the vision of the product and the customer problems addressed by it. Use the web to find appropriate people and a means of contacting them. Ability to keep abreast with developments and advances in the tech domain
  • Product awareness: Awareness of various market categories, product types, and in-depth knowledge of product series and their specifications
  • Influence and negotiation: Demonstrate the ability to influence potential leads and negotiate with them to convert the leads into acquisitions
  • Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication with proficiency in English is a key tool for this role, as the Developer Relations Marketing Executive is required to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders as and when required. Empathy while communicating is also a key aspect of communication
  • Relationship building: Building strong relationships with authors, promotional partners and other stakeholders
  • Community Building: Ability to develop a strong network of tech experts
  • Driving engagement: Ensure regular, value-added activity on the products, to keep the community engaged
  • Problem solving and decision making: Compare data, information, and input from a variety of sources to draw conclusions and take action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences
  • Planning: Devising a strong plan well in advance and being prepared with backups, in case of fallacies
  • Drive for results: Has a high level of determination and willpower to deliver results that meet or exceed targets, even in the face of setbacks and obstacles

    Influencer Posts/month: Base Target- 6, Actuals- 8

    Outreach (Website Backlink/Podcast/Events/Meetups/Conferences): Base Target- 2, Actuals- 3

    Editorial Reviews: Base Target- 2, Actuals- 3


    Objectives:

    Enhance your Community Network by 25% and build strong relationships

    Make all PEN Releases bestsellers in their respective categories

    For titles with the following LTV, target a VPT of:

    LTV - GBP 40-50k+

    30-day VPT- 60

    60-day VPT- 120

    90-day VPT- 170


    LTV - GBP 50-75k

    30-day VPT- 100

    60-day VPT- 200

    90-day VPT- 300


    LTV - 75k - 100k

    30-day VPT- 130

    60-day VPT- 260

    90-day VPT- 380


    LTV - 100k+

    30-day VPT- 165

    60-day VPT- 330

    90-day VPT- 500


    Key Results:

    Make all PEN Releases bestsellers in their respective categories:

    Devise and implement a customized and detailed 9-month Marketing Plan for all 50k+ LTV Titles while setting monthly milestones

    Enhance your Community Network by 25% and build strong relationships

    Ensure increase of your LinkedIn Follower Count by 25% by October 2023. These additional members should be only from the community

    Do 3 engaging posts every week, out of which only upto 6 posts/month should be related to the titles. Follow the 5-3-2 Rule

    Develop 10 'Core Contacts' by end of June with whom you collaborate with on a regular basis for promotionsN
