About Oil and Gas Technology: 

OGT is a team of around 200 scientists and engineers who develop and provide pioneering solutions to support bp’s Production and Operations (P&O) and Gas and Low Carbon Energy (G&LCE) businesses.

The Reservoir Recovery Unit sits in OGT team, part of Applied Sciences Technology. The team is part of the 60-strong Subsurface and Wells group, working closely with P&O to develop innovative technological solutions addressing both near- and longer-term challenges. The Reservoir Recovery Unit is the home of the Dynamic Displacement laboratory, which provides unique experimental capability and delivers data across waterflood/gasflood, special core analysis (SCAL, including relative permeability), enhanced oil recovery, production assurance (production chemistry) and wells technology.

You will join the Reservoir Recovery Laboratory team and provide specialist imaging expertise in support of the Digital Rocks squad and regional businesses.

Job Purpose and primary objectives:

You will be responsible for the management, maintenance and safe operation of specialised micro and nano-CT (mCT and nCT) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipment. In this role, you will lead experiment design and data quality assurance, providing specialist measurements and insights to the Digital Rocks squad. You will also provide specialist analytical support to regional businesses.

Additionally, you will collaborate closely with bp technical experts in computational science and petrophysics maximising the number of data realisations for any cored interval. You will also supervise the state-of-the-art in imaging technology to identify how innovation and new technology deployment will align to company needs.

Key responsibilities include:

• Acquire X-Ray Computer Tomography images at micron and below resolution, including on core samples taken from bp global operations.
• Apply scanning electron microscopy within SCAL workflow and as a specialist diagnostic technique.
• Manage the sample preparation lab/area and perform micro-sample preparation for mCT and SEM.
• Conduct all laboratory activities in a safe manner, demonstrating thorough knowledge of x-ray radiation safe practices and maintaining an orderly operating environment, particularly in shared spaces.
• Interact with senior level staff in the High-Performance Computing facility to ensure specific needs of large volume data handling and transfer are met.
• Represent bp interests in consortia and in collaboration with high value equipment manufacturers and software developers.
• Report preparation and data presentation to project leaders and senior stakeholders in-company.

Primary Skills:

• At least five years of strong expertise in petrophysics, digital visualisation, X‑ray imaging, and/or scanning electron microscopy, with application to production and subsurface science.
• Strong project management, organisational skills.
• A conscientious and inclusive leadership style, with the ability to foster agility and teamwork.
• Good communication skills.

Experience:

• Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in petrophysics, imaging, or a related field.
• Proven hands‑on laboratory experience covering study planning, execution, and reporting.
• Strong experience in prioritising and embedding laboratory safety processes.
