About the Role:

This role is for a Livestock & Livelihood Specialist, operating as a Team Member within the Disaster Management Job Family. The position reports to the Lead-DRR & Response.

The core objective of this role is to manage the livelihood of vulnerable communities that depend on livestock, poultry, fisheries, and agriculture in program states during all disaster phases. This includes Disaster Risk Reduction, Preparedness, and Response, with a special focus on livestock protection in emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:

The Livestock & Livelihood Specialist will be accountable for:

  • Providing technical expertise on livelihood protection (livestock, poultry, fisheries) to vulnerable communities.
  • Developing state-specific plans and strategies for livelihood and livestock protection in emergencies.
  • Building networks and partnerships with stakeholders to strengthen livestock-based livelihoods in emergencies.
  • Developing modules and providing trainings to farmers, para-vets, partners, and stakeholders for the protection of livestock, poultry, and fisheries in emergencies.
  • Promoting tools, guidelines, standards, and best practices on animal welfare and climate-resilient livelihood (e.g., LEGS and SEADS standards).
  • Developing a "Livestock Knowledge Directory" and documenting innovative climate-resilient livelihood practices.
  • Providing implementation support to project teams (DRR and Response) on the field, related to livestock feed, water, and veterinary support.
  • Providing technical support in designing and developing livestock species-specific Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) resources.
  • Conducting technical reporting of the program, MIS, and dashboards.
  • Regularly monitoring and periodically assessing the Health, Productivity, and Economic value of livestock and livelihood assets.

Success in this role will be measured by metrics such as:

  • The number of modules developed for capacity development on Livestock protection in emergencies.
  • The number of contingency and preparedness plans prepared for livelihood and livestock protection.
  • The number of capacity development workshops conducted on livelihood and livestock protection in emergencies.
  • The percentage increase in farmers adopting climate-resilient livelihood practices.
  • The percentage of community members with improved preparedness levels for livelihood and livestock protection in emergencies.
  • The number of para-vets trained in livestock protection in emergencies.
  • The number of risk assessment tools developed for livelihood and livestock in emergencies.
  • The number of community awareness programs on livelihood protection.
  • The number of farmers with improved access to advisories on climate-resilient livelihood practices.
  • The number of awareness programs conducted on livestock health and disease management, fodder options, feed-balancing, and silage making.
  • Identification and leveraging of ecosystem services through interventions on nature-based solutions for DRR, including mangrove plantation and bio-shields.
  • Leveraging government schemes through social safety nets.

Key interactions for this role will include internal program verticals and relevant external stakeholders such as Government Stakeholders from Livelihood and Livestock departments, communities (fishermen, farmers, and other livelihood groups), animal protection organizations, NGO partners, para-veterinarians, and market stakeholders.

Education Qualifications:

  • Must have a Post Graduation in the field of Livelihood/Livestock, preferably in a related field.

Experience (Must Have & Good to Have):

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working within the Disaster Management Sector.
  • Experience working on issues of livestock protection and/or livelihood protection, recovery, and rehabilitation programs.
  • Experience working with UN agencies on Disaster Management is a plus.
  • Experience working in the private sector in Disaster Management is desirable.
