Manager Sheet Metal Design (Aluminium Equipment)

Job Description

We are hiring a Sheet Metal Design Manager to lead the design of aluminium kitchen equipment and enclosures. Our client has recently secured a large order in this segment, and this role will be central to delivering it. The Manager will take designs from concept through to manufacturing release, lead the design team and work closely with production, quality and sales.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of aluminium kitchen equipment and enclosures, from concept and 3D modelling to detailed production drawings.


• Create and manage all designs in SolidWorks, including sheet metal parts, weldments, assemblies and flat patterns.


• Manage and mentor the design team, allocate work, review drawings and ensure on-time release to meet project delivery schedules.


• Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles for cutting, bending, punching, welding and assembly of aluminium components.


• Select suitable aluminium grades (e.g., 5052, 6061, 3003) and thicknesses based on strength, weight, finish, hygiene and cost requirements.


• Design kitchen equipment with food-grade hygiene in mind, including cleanability, smooth welds and no dirt traps.


• Design enclosures with suitable ingress protection (IP rating), ventilation, cable entry and mounting provisions as per customer requirements.


• Specify surface finishing requirements such as anodizing, powder coating or brushed finish.


• Prepare and approve BOMs, fabrication drawings, weldment drawings and assembly drawings with correct GD&T, tolerances and tolerance stack-up analysis.


• Coordinate prototyping, first-article inspection and design validation before bulk production.


• Coordinate with production and fabrication teams to resolve shop-floor issues and support smooth execution of large-volume orders.


• Work with customers and the sales team to understand specifications, develop custom designs and prepare technical proposals.


• Ensure designs comply with applicable quality, safety and industry standards.


• Drive standardisation of components, cost reduction and continuous improvement in design practices.


• Maintain design documentation, revision control and engineering change management.

Desired Candidate Profile

• B.E./B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.


• 5–15 years of experience in sheet metal design, preferably in kitchen equipment, enclosures or similar fabricated products.


• Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks (sheet metal, weldments, assemblies, drawings) is mandatory; working knowledge of AutoCAD.


• Knowledge of Autodesk Inventor or Creo is an added advantage.


• Hands-on experience with aluminium sheet metal fabrication and aluminium welding (TIG/MIG).


• Good knowledge of bend allowance, K-factor, flat pattern development and nesting.


• Understanding of manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, CNC punching and press brake bending.


• Exposure to ERP/PLM systems is preferred.


• Experience leading or mentoring a design team is preferred.


• Strong leadership, communication, coordination and problem-solving skills.


• Ability to handle multiple projects under tight timelines.

Education

• UG: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering


• PG: M.E./M.Tech (preferred, not mandatory)
