Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer

Job Description - Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer

Plumbing and fire protection engineer

Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (mandatory). ASPE affiliation,

NICET awareness, or fire protection coursework is a plus

Job description:

own the wet-side scope of US building

projects — domestic water, sanitary and storm drainage, natural gas, and fire suppression systems —

from sizing calculations through coordinated construction documents and construction administration.

Plumbing design is executed in full; fire protection work centres on system design criteria, sprinkler

layouts, and performance specifications, coordinated with the fire protection contractor’s detailed shop

drawings and hydraulic calculations

Plumbing Design & Engineering

• Design domestic cold and hot water systems using fixture-unit methodology — pipe sizing,

booster pumps, water heater selection, mixing and recirculation provisions

Design sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage (including overflow provisions), and natural gas

piping systems per the applicable plumbing and fuel gas codes.

• Size and specify interceptors, backflow prevention, and water treatment provisions as required

by the project and jurisdiction.

• Select and schedule plumbing fixtures and equipment; verify water-efficiency requirements

(EPAct, state codes, CALGreen / LEED where applicable).

Fire Protection Design

• Develop fire suppression design criteria — hazard classification, density / area requirements,

and water supply analysis — per NFPA 13.

• Prepare sprinkler system layouts, standpipe designs (NFPA 14), and fire pump arrangements

(NFPA 20), including underground fire service mains (NFPA 24).

• Understand hydraulic calculation principles and review the fire protection contractor’s shop

drawings and calculations against the design intent.

• Coordinate fire protection systems with architecture, structure, and the other MEP disciplines —

ceiling coordination, pipe routing, and equipment access.

Construction Documents & BIM

• Produce complete, code-compliant construction document sets in Revit to office standards

across SD, DD, CD, and CA phases.

• Coordinate with mechanical and electrical disciplines; resolve clashes and integration issues

before drawings are issued, using Navisworks and BIM coordination sessions.

• Draft project-specific specification sections for plumbing and fire suppression systems

(MasterFormat Divisions 21 / 22).

Construction Administration

• Own the RFI workflow on your projects — receive, interpret, respond, log, and track to closure,

with responses that need minimal revision from the US team.

• Prepare plan check / AHJ comment responses and resolution drawings for US jurisdiction

submissions.

• Review vendor submittals and fire protection shop drawings, evaluate substitution requests, and

coordinate with vendors and manufacturers’ representatives.

• Assist with change order documentation, participate in punch list development, and review

designs for constructability before issue

QA QC

US/ Client interface

Tool Expected proficiency

Revit (MEP) Mid: advanced — models plumbing and fire protection systems from

scratch, coordinated sheets, schedules. Senior: expert — sets model

standards, resolves model health issues, reviews others’ work.

AutoCAD Proficient to expert — fast, accurate 2D production to office standards.

Sizing & calc tools Proficient — fixture-unit, storm, and gas sizing via team calculation

templates; able to build a structured calculation sheet from scratch.

Hydraulic calc tools Awareness of sprinkler hydraulic calculation software outputs; Senior:

reviews contractor calculations at a technical level.

Navisworks Familiar — clash detection and BIM coordination sessions. Senior: leads

India-side coordination.

Excel / Bluebeam Strong — calculation workbooks, drawing markups and review sets

Plumbing codes IPC / UPC — sizing, venting, materials, and water supply protection — as

the model-code foundation, plus awareness of how states amend them.

Fuel gas IFGC / NFPA 54 — gas pipe sizing and appliance connection

requirements.

Fire protection NFPA 13 (sprinklers), 14 (standpipes), 20 (fire pumps), 24 (fire service

mains) — design-criteria command; IBC / IFC interface for system

requirements.

Primary markets

(added advantage)

California — CPC (Title 24 Part 5) and California Fire Code; Florida —

Florida Building Code (Plumbing) and the Florida Fire Prevention Code

(NFPA-based); Georgia — state amendments to IPC; New York — NYC

Plumbing Code and NYC Fire Code / FDNY requirements. Experience in

any of these regimes is an added advantage, not a prerequisite.

Water efficiency EPAct fixture requirements; CALGreen / LEED water credits where

applicable.

Specifications Divisions 21 / 22 (MasterFormat) — drafts project-specific sections; Senior

authors and approves the full package.
