Job Description - Principal Engineer Electromechanical

Roles and Responsibilities :

  1. Team Leadership and Development: 

  • Build and lead a team of engineers in the battery R&D department, providing guid​ance, mentorship, and technical expertise to drive the team's success. 

  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for multiple teams within the battery development group, including cell, thermal, mechanical, manufacturing engineering, prototyping and testing, data analytics, and Battery Management Systems (BMS). 

  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment to encourage continuous learning and professional growth among team members. 

  1. Battery Engineering and Development: 

  • Oversee and manage all new battery engineering projects across multiple platforms, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards. 

  • Supervise the ground-up design, prototyping, and manufacturing of battery modules, packs, and associated assemblies. 

  • Implement cutting-edge methodologies for thermal propagation control and fire retardation within EV batteries. 

  1. Project Strategy and Execution: 

  • Establish and execute test strategies, including design verification plans and ongoing reliability testing, to ensure battery products meet safety and performance standards. 

  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and resources across all battery teams to ensure projects stay on track. 

  1. Innovation and Strategic Planning: 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative battery solutions for different applications, including EVs, military use, retrofit projects, and stationary storage products. 

  • Advise on strategic decisions such as value chain analysis and manufacturing techniques to drive business growth and improve production efficiency. 

  • Support research and development efforts to identify and implement new technologies and processes that can enhance battery performance and safety. 

  1. Compliance and Safety: 

  • Ensure all battery projects comply with safety regulations and industry standards for energy storage products. 

  • Conduct risk assessments and work on continuous improvement to enhance the safety and reliability of battery systems.  

  1. Stakeholder Communication and Collaboration: 

  • Work closely with other departments and stakeholders, including manufacturing and production teams, to facilitate the seamless integration of battery solutions into the broader business strategy. 

  • Provide technical advice and insights to external stakeholders, such as government bodies, consultancies, and entrepreneurs, on battery technologies and future trends. 

  1. Resource Management: 

  • Oversee the selection and acquisition of capital equipment and resources needed for battery R&D and manufacturing. 

  • Manage budgets, timelines, and resource allocation to optimize the efficiency and productivity of battery engineering projects. 

  1. Quality Assurance: 

  • Lead quality assurance efforts, including supplier audits and product line reviews, to maintain the highest standards in battery manufacturing and production. 

  • Monitor and analyze performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement and implement corrective and preventive actions. 


Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (BE/B.Tech) or higher in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed institution.
  • Proven experience in the design and development of electro-mechanical systems in the electric vehicle (EV) domain, especially related to battery packs, chargers, and power electronics enclosures.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis for high-voltage systems.
  • Experience in thermal management techniques including simulation, prototyping, and implementation in battery modules or energy storage systems.
  • Deep knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles, especially for low-volume, high-reliability EV components.
  • Familiarity with battery enclosure sealing, EMI/EMC shielding, vibration and shock protection techniques for automotive-grade assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, fixture design, and tooling for mechanical components in R&D and pre-production stages.
  • Knowledge of thermal propagation control and fire mitigation strategies for lithium-ion battery systems.
  • Ability to work closely with electrical, firmware, thermal, and testing teams to co-develop robust, integrated systems.
  • Strong project management and team leadership capabilities to guide cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with PLM systems, BOM structuring, and change management processes in product lifecycle development.
  • Excellent communication skills and stakeholder management experience across engineering, manufacturing, and external partners.
  • A passion for innovation, attention to detail, and a drive to build mechanically sound, production-ready EV solutions.
