Principal Engineer - Tunnel Structures

We are seeking a Principal Tunnel Engineer – Underground Structures (Mining & Civil) to provide technical leadership in the design and delivery of underground structures for mining and civil infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary design teams, provide technical governance, drive design excellence, and ensure the successful delivery of projects from feasibility through detailed design and construction support. The role requires strong engineering expertise, project leadership capability, and a commitment to developing technical talent across the business.

• Lead the design and delivery of underground structures including:
  • Shaft linings
  • Tunnel and cavern linings
  • Declines and access tunnels
  • Underground chambers and excavations
  • Portal structures

• Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams across mining and civil underground infrastructure projects.
• Provide technical leadership for structural analysis and design considering:
  • Ground loading and ground-structure interaction
  • Hydrostatic and groundwater pressures
  • Construction staging and temporary works loading
  • Operational and long-term durability requirements
  • Constructability and risk considerations
• Direct the preparation, review, and approval of engineering calculations, reports, specifications, and design deliverables.
• Lead design reviews, risk assessments, value engineering studies, and quality assurance activities.
• Coordinate interfaces between structural, geotechnical, mining, civil, mechanical, and construction disciplines.
• Ensure compliance with client requirements, industry standards, and WSP procedures.
• Support project planning, programme management, resource allocation, and budget control.
• Mentor and develop engineers towards technical excellence and professional accreditation.
• Provide technical support for bids, proposals, and business development activities.
• Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
• Champion innovation, digital delivery, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent internationally recognised professional qualification.
• Member of a relevant professional engineering institution.
• Typically 12–18 years of experience in tunnelling, underground structures, mining infrastructure, or major multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and delivering complex underground projects.

Mandatory Skills

• Proven experience leading the design and delivery of tunnels, shafts, caverns, underground chambers, and associated underground infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of reinforced concrete and structural steel design.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Eurocodes, British Standards, and relevant international design standards.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinating technical interfaces.
• Strong understanding of ground-structure interaction and underground construction methodologies.
• Experience in design management, technical governance, quality assurance, and risk management.
• Strong client-facing, communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience mentoring engineers and supporting professional accreditation.
• Strong commercial awareness and experience supporting bids and proposals.
• Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining technical excellence and project delivery objectives.
