About the Role:

PhonePe's Data Platform powers India's largest consumer payments app at national scale—managing petabyte-scale infrastructure, batch/real-time pipelines, and developer tooling entirely on-premise. You'll build the core data infrastructure, tools, and internal products that enable hundreds of engineers, analysts, data scientists, and business teams to move faster.

What You'll Do: 

• Own product strategy, specs, and roadmaps for data platform components, APIs, and developer tools


• Synthesize requirements from business/product teams and translate them into system APIs, developer interfaces, and platform capabilities


• Work with architects and engineering leads to balance reliability, performance, technical debt, and new features


• Design solutions for data quality, governance, cataloging, and pipeline efficiency at petabyte scale


• Define and track platform health metrics: latency, query performance, uptime, adoption, resource efficiency

Must Haves:

1. Product Management Experience




1. 1-3 year as PM/APM with product ownership, OR 


2. 2-3 years as Data/Backend Engineer with PM work (PRDs, roadmaps, user research)




2. Technical Stack Depth




1. Deep understanding: ETL/ELT pipelines, data warehousing, data lakes/lakehouses


2. Advanced SQL (query optimization, not just SELECT statements) 


3. Hands-on with ONE of: Hive/Spark/Hadoop/HDFS, Snowflake/Databricks/BigQuery, or Airflow/DBT/Kafka/Trino 


4. Understands how data systems work end-to-end (not just BI layer)




3. Problem-First Thinking




1. Asks clarifying questions before solutions (WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY, HOW) 


2. Articulates problems → solutions → outcomes (not feature lists) 


3. Synthesizes requirements from diverse stakeholders into clear product specs




4. Structured Approach




1. Breaks down ambiguous problems systematically


2. States assumptions explicitly and validates them


3. Thinks in MVP phases and iterations




5. Technical Communication




1. Holds technical discussions with engineers/architects


2. Translates business needs into system specs, APIs, and developer interfaces


3. Writes clear PRDs, specs, and documentation

Good To Haves:

• TB/PB-scale data systems experience


• On-prem stack: Hive, Spark, HDFS, Hadoop, Impala (cloud experience acceptable if fundamentals strong)


• Built internal developer tools, APIs, or self-service platforms


• Data governance: cataloging, lineage, access controls, metadata management, observability


• AI-native workflow: Active user of ChatGPT/Claude/GitHub Copilot; bonus for GenAI features (RAG, LLM apps)


• High-potential signals: Published work, side projects, led cross-functional teams
