We are seeking an experienced Relay Protection Engineer to join our power systems and electrical engineering team. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in protection systems, relay testing, and system reliability for transmission, distribution, and generation assets. This role is critical in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical networks through the design, configuration, testing, and maintenance of protection and control systems. The candidate should have hands-on experience with modern numerical relays, protection coordination, and industry standards, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex system issues in real time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform end-to-end relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection systems across substations, power plants, or industrial facilities.
  • Review, configure, and verify settings for numerical, digital, and electromechanical relays, including distance, differential, over-current, earth-fault, and other protection schemes.
  • Conduct protection coordination studies and develop relay settings using industry-standard tools and OEM software.
  • Analyze system disturbances, faults, and events by reviewing relay records, fault reports, SOE logs, and oscillography; recommend corrective and preventive measures.
  • Prepare, execute, and document testing procedures, including primary injection, secondary injection, scheme testing, logic verification, and functional checks.
  • Support commissioning activities for new substations, transformers, switchgear, and protection panels by ensuring accurate wiring, CT/PT checks, and scheme validation.
  • Collaborate with design, operations, and maintenance teams to ensure protection systems align with project specifications, grid codes, and safety regulations.
  • Troubleshoot system issues related to relay misoperations, wiring faults, communication failures, CT/PT inaccuracies, and SCADA/IED interface problems.
  • Participate in root cause analysis for protection system failures and assist in implementing reliability improvements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of relay settings, test reports, as-built drawings, and configuration files for audit and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to electrical safety practices, isolation procedures, and applicable national/international standards (IEC, IEEE, IS, NERC, etc.).
  • Assist in training junior engineers, technicians, and field staff on relay testing tools, procedures, and protection concepts.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; specialization in Power Systems preferred.
  • 3–8 years of hands-on experience in protection engineering, relay testing, or power system commissioning.
  • Strong expertise with numerical relays from vendors such as ABB, Siemens, GE, SEL, Schneider, or similar.
  • Proficiency in relay testing equipment like Omicron (CPC 100, CMC series), Megger, or equivalent.
  • Practical knowledge of protection schemes including transformer, feeder, line, motor, generator, busbar, and differential protection.
  • Experience working with SCADA integration, communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus), and substation automation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret protection SLDs, logic diagrams, wiring drawings, and panel layouts.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting skills, especially under field and outage conditions.
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in EPC, utility, transmission/distribution, renewable energy, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Exposure to FAT/SAT activities, substation automation, and protection panel design considered an advantage.
