A five-month mixed-methods research study is being conducted in two low-income settlements in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, to examine how access to sanitation and water services affects health, dignity, time use, safety, and livelihood participation, with a focus on women engaged in the informal economy. We are seeking a Research Consultant, preferably based in Dehradun, to lead day-to-day study implementation, including research design support, field coordination, data collection management, analysis, and preparation of research outputs under the guidance of the Research Lead and Senior Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities:
Support desk review, inception planning, and refinement of the research methodology, including finalisation of study sites and approach.
Develop and refine research tools for household surveys, Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and qualitative documentation.
Coordinate field preparation activities, including tool piloting, field team orientation, and training.
Oversee household-level data collection across approximately 200–250 households in two settlements.
Conduct and supervise KIIs with government officials, frontline workers, local representatives, community leaders, and civil society organisations.
Facilitate and oversee FGDs with women workers, adolescent girls, male residents, and other vulnerable groups.
Document settlement-level conditions related to sanitation, drainage, water access, waste management, and safety concerns.
Support data management, including cleaning, organising, coding, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
Contribute to the preparation of the inception note, research report, presentation materials, and dissemination of findings.
Incorporate feedback from stakeholders and support the timely delivery of all research outputs.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s degree in social sciences, public policy, urban studies, development studies, gender studies, public health, WASH, or a related discipline.
4–5 years of experience conducting field-based research within the development sector.
Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as Power BI, SPSS, STATA, MS Excel, and other relevant analytical software.
Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing surveys, interviews, FGDs, and qualitative research studies.
Understanding of themes related to WASH, gender, women’s livelihoods, public health, urban governance, or informal settlements.
Strong research, analytical, writing, documentation, and coordination skills.
Ability to engage respectfully and effectively with low-income communities, particularly women workers and marginalised groups.
Proficiency in Hindi and English (written and spoken) is essential.
